How long did your baby fit in infant car seat?

I didn't realize FP had started making car seats again- that is GREAT news!!! Years ago they had the best car seats, until they got out of the car seat business in about...October of 2001?? We have 2 of the Safe Embraces from my 6 year old that my 2 year old is still in, and I tell you what that was the greatest $60 ever spent. They are so big and comfy, the straps are super wide and impossible to twist, and they have this metal bar that surrounds the seat for extra protection. I remember they used to get the highest reviews from consumer reports back then too. I don't know if they are making them as good this time around, but I would surely check them out!!!

Is this the one you have?

I think the old FP's have an 8yr lifespan so if it's older than that you should replace them. It sounds like you've really gotten your money's worth out of them though!

The new FP's are actually made under license for FP by Britax. They are essentially a Marathon w/out a few of the extra features (HUGS, r/fing tether, only harness to 55# instead of 65#). They are very well liked by people who own them though.

Well I made it out of the house today! I think that we are going to go with the Marathon. I like the feel of it and the straps/snaps were easy to open. Plus all the good reviews I have read. I don't think that the seat is very heavy, then again I am lugging 20+ lbs in the carrier so it has to be lighter than that!! Thanks again for all the great input!:thumbsup2

My youngest is 3.5 months now and weighed 17 lbs and 24.75" at his last appointment. We were just saying today that we don't think he will fit in it very long. We have the Safe Embrace car seat linked above (not affected by the recall) that we used with our middle son and LOVED it. It is SO easy to install securely. I had just told DH I needed to look up the replacement guidelines since our older son is now almost 5. Glad to see it is 8 years. Also glad to hear that Fisher Price is back in the carseat game and making them under a license from Britax. We will need a new booster for the baby so we can use the Safe Embrace for a while then buy one of the FP/Britax ones to use after that.

My older 2 outgrew the infant seats at around 4-5 months old.

It really depends on the seat and the size of the baby. DD7 was in her infant seat until 9 mos. DS5 was in the infant seat until about 4 months (he was a big baby - 9.5 lbs at birth).

We now have a new DS who is 3 months old. He's about 12 lbs and 23 in. We have the Graco Safe Seat for him. We are still using the lowest slots for the straps. It seems like he could use this seat forever, but it is a very heavy seat. I will probably move him to a Britax Roundabout in a few more months, even though he could still use the infant seat. I love Britax seats.

DD fit in it for a quite a while - I think she was nine or ten months when we finally stopped using it, and that was because she was ready to sit up more, not because she'd outgrown it. She was only 19 pounds at a year old and now at three years old she hovers between 28-29 pounds.

I just wanted to point out, being that I'm a car seat Tech that when you baby out grows the Infant seat you HAVE to keep them Rear Facing In a convertible seat till an absolute MINIMUM of 1 year and 20lbs. And the BEST thing to do then is to KEEP them REAR FACING till they out grow the seat by weight for rear facing the LOWEST is 30lbs and up to as much as 35. You baby/child and EVERYONE for that matter is so so so much safer rear facing. I still have my daughter who's 2 years and 5 months rear facing and she is 32lbs (we have a 35lbs rfing seat). My other dd just switched to forward facing at 4 years old she's a small skinny child, and wasn't 35lbs till then. She is now in a radian forward facing. and will be till she's 65lbs.

Amen!!! My DS was a big baby as well and I asked his doc about it and he said no way - must be a minimum of 1 year. Theres alot more involved then how much the baby weighs it has alot to do with the babies' muscles and control. They are so much safer rear facing. If you're still unsure what to do, ask your doc.

I'm confused by the last two posts. I don't remember seeing any references to anyone wanting to quickly turn kids front-facing, just to taking them out of infant seats. All toddler seats will install rear-facing, so moving up to the next step doesn't imply a change in the direction -- unless you jump a step and go straight from an infant seat to a booster.

I think they were just stressing the importance of rear-facing. In reading the other posts I didn't see where they mentioned they were or weren't changing direction. I would assume they would keep them rear-facing - as one of the previous posters is a car seat tech she/he was just showing concern. No harm done - just information.

Yep i was just adding it in there b/c of the fact that i seen and talk with parents all the time who are "oh babies one year and 20lbs, lets flip them" NO NO NO don't do it! :) keep baby rfing!

Because many people don't understand the benefits of rear-facing and as soon as their dc hits 20# will flip them forward facing because they think at that point it's ok. It's just a reminder that just because they can be f/fing at 1 yr AND 20lbs (not either/or) doesn't mean they have to be. The AAP actually has been recommending r/fing to the limits of the convertible car seat allowance since 2002, unfortunately many ped's aren't up on their car safety info and will tell parents to go ahead and flip them forward facing if they are growing out of their infant seat, sometimes, even before a year of age. I like the saying "If you want medical advice, ask a doctor. If you want car seat advice, ask a CPST". :goodvibes

My son will be 4 months old this Sunday & is almost 20 lbs & 28.5 inches! My husband is 6'6" so I expected to have a tall child, but this is scary how long he is! I'm hoping to talk to his doctor in the next week or two to see if he's just experiencing a growth spurt & if it will slow down anytime soon. With that being said, he is still using his infant car seat, but he is nearly too big for it & I've got to start looking for something else fairly soon.

My eldest was 8lb and 22" at birth, 23" at 2 week check up. Could never use a sling as he just was too big. I had to get the convertable seat for him at 6 months as he was too tall for the infant seat, straps way under his shoulders, but he was still under the weight limit.

Every appointment as a baby, he would grow at least 1.5" and put on a 1-2lb. Our doctor had no problem, he was growing just upward.

He's now 10 and 5'2" 110 lbs

Sorry, but the 3-in-1's are not likely to be "the last car seat you'll ever need" as advertised. I had one of these, and my ds outgrew it by height at 27lbs and only 34mos of age. It's not an unsafe seat (as long as used correctly) but there are numerous reasons why this isn't a "great" seat, or at least a seat you'll get the bang out of your buck that is falsely promised. It's essentially a "jack of all trades, master of none".

First the Pros: It comes in pretty covers, and it has a 35lb r/fing weight limit. :)

The Cons:
The top harness slot is the fourth (or 2nd from top) position. This is stamped onto the shell on the back of the seat (but hard to see so you really have to look for it) and the manual is kind of vague in it's wording as well. Many people are not aware of this which means the seat is easy to misuse. I mention it because I was unaware and found out about it on a car safety tips board (then verified by carefully reading my manual).

The top Harness position is 15" and many kids outgrow this by height between 3-4yrs old.

The minimum weight requirement to use as a belt positioning booster is 40lbs. So in order to get full use as a harness car seat and a bpb your dc will have to hit 40lbs right at 4yrs old (the bare minimum recommended age for moving "up" to booster mode) AND not have a torso over 15". That's quite a lot to ask and many children will grow too tall for the harness before they reach 40lbs and 4yrs of age.

Another problem with the seat is because it's designed to convert to a bpb, it doesn't offer a lot of head support (my ds's head slumped horribly when it was in f/fing mode and even in r/fing mode if I didn't have it reclined all the way and he fell asleep. Note that I had the AO which looks a little bit different than the EB linked in the pp but they are essentially the same seat with different covers. The EB linked does look like it has a slightly more padded headrest than my AO had.

It doesn't make a great booster either. The shoulder guides can cause the seatbelt to not retract properly if the child leans forward, the lap belt guides can hold the belt too far from the childs body. It only boosters to 53" and the recommended minimum (and law in some states) is to booster to 4'9 or 57". The seat also expires 6yrs from date of mfgr so if you buy it when your dc is 1 then it will be expired by the time they're 7 and probably not big enough to be out of a bpb yet. Sorry to rain on the pp. but I had one of these seats and it ended up being a huge disappointment. I would have saved money if I'd just bought a higher weight limit seat. At that time there were fewer options. Now there are a couple more options like the Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe and the Sunshine Kids Radian so you don't have to spend over $200 to get a bigger seat (like the Britax Marathon/Decathlon/Blvd) that will keep your dc in a 5-pt harness years longer than a 3-in-1 or just about any 40lb limit seat currently on the market. And the older my ds gets, the more I realize I want him in a 5-pt harness as long as possible. ;)

hth.

So, so true! We have gone through 3 car seats in 3 months. At 4 yrs old, 36 lbs and 42 inches tall my son is too tall for any "regular" carseat but NOT heavy enough for a booster since he is not 40 lbs, not that I want one. Britax don't fit in our car due to the fact his head is then 4 inches from ceiling due to high bases they sit on. We had to get a Cosco Apex saturday until a new Recaro comes out in May. Had to buy a Recaro in January for other car, until again new one comes out in may (or son hits 40 lbs), that one only holds to 40 lbs.

I would purchase a car seat expecting to purchase another. If a Britax fits it really seems like they would be the best bet in the long run, we bought the Boulevard in August but just wasn't to be!

As for infant carriers, I took my son out around 4 months. I didn't like it that well at all.

Also a note, keep a child rear facing for as LONG as possible, most seats will now go up to 30 or 35 lbs. It is so so much safer.

In case no one has posted www.car-seat.org is a greap place for info.
