How is the French onion soup at BOG?

I love French onion soup when it is done well (which is kind of rare). Anyone have a review? Getting the soup, sandwich, and a cupcake is a lot of food for me, but I'd like the get the soup if its worth it.

And speaking of cupcakes, is it possible to get a container for it? I really want the grey stuff, but if I'm too full, I wouldn't mind saving it for a little later.

I've had it several times. It's good, not great. I personally prefer the french onion soup at Chefs de France and actually prefer Chefs' lobster bisque over the french onion.

From what I understand, the onion soup at BOG uses vegetable broth instead of the more common beef broth.

I’m glad to read these reviews of the French onion soup. We ate dinner at BOG during that crazy cold snap at the beginning of January. I chose the Lobster Bisque over the French onion and seriously regretted it. It was absolutely disgusting! Worst meal of our 9 day trip. I’m glad to have experienced the Beast’s castle, but BOG moves to one and done list for sure.

French Onion is wasn’t anything I’d recommend from BOG. I’d have to say I prefer to eat at Casey’s on most days though :)

French onion soup should have. Skip it at BOG and have it at Chefs de France in Epcot.

Chef's French Onion was the WORST French Onion soup I have ever had. There were nearly no onions in it and the broth was just bland. Horrible.

The lobster bisque was awful last week at BoG. My husband had the French onion, it had a ludricus amount of cheese. It was really on the edge of comedic.

I had this soup when I ate at BOG. I was thrilled that it was vegetarian since most french onion soup is made with beef broth. I thought it was fabulous and would go there just for the soup. Hope that helps!

My DH loves French Onion soup and unfortunately for us, the best he has ever had is at a local supper club. He has tried it at BOG and Chef's. The vegetarian stock used by BOG tends to be oversalted, perhaps to make up for the lack of beef taste. His favorite base is a combination of slow simmered chicken and beef stock. The cheese is very good however.

Ok, that did NOT help at ALL. :)

I do appreciate everyone's responses. There is just so much varying opinion. I placed my pre-order with the soup and I'll decide later if I want to change it. It might depend on the weather too. If its cool or rainy, I will probably want soup anyway. If its hot, I may skip it.

That was DH’s experience. He’s had FO at some very high end restaurants, and felt BOG topped them all. You could actually taste the onions, not just whatever broth they used. The server told us they slowly cook the onions for hours every morning for it.

But I read recently here that it wasn’t vegetarian anymore. The person gave no basis for the statement, though I stopped checking for a response. Maybe they were wrong after all?

Not that DH or DS have any interest in going to Wdw...

I’m glad that I’m not the only one! I love restaurant quality French Onion soup and it’s one of the few things that I miss since becoming a vegetarian. BOG’s version is perfect. It’s my favorite thing to eat at MK, now that the Lighthouse is gone. I’ll cry if they ever replace it with a beef broth version. Lol

ETA I just checked MDE and the menu still lists the soup as a vegetarian option
