Hi,
I'm sure someone has asked about this before, but my search function won't work. We will be going to DCA for the first time at the end of this month and we have made a lunch PS for Ariel's Grotto. Has anyone eaten here? We have 3 DD's, ages 10, 6 and 2. Any opinions of this restaurant? Thanks!

I went to Ariel's for the first time last month for dinner. I wasn't impressed. The characters were fine -- I think we saw Goofy, Minnie, Chip & Dale, & Pluto. I think there was someone else, but I can't remember who. I think the shift changed while we were there, so we may have gotten more characters than normal. Ariel greeted guests in a lobby area. The food was just so-so. The selections weren't that great -- a tomato pasta dish, a meatloaf (OK, but nothing special according to my son who LOVES meatloaf), a cheese burger, a chicken-pot-pie type thing I think. One or two more things to choose from. I chose the pasta dish since it looked like the only thing with less than 20 grams of fat. The fixed price ($20 for dinner) did include deserts, and they were pretty good. I don't know if the lunch menu is the same or as expensive as dinner. I didn't see the children's menu since my DS is 13. The decor looks better in the pictures to me. In person it looked kinda plastic. But I thought the bathrooms were cute. While I probably won't go back, it is more likely to appeal to girls, so you may like it just fine.

On the other hand, I highly recommend Goofy's Kitchen. I just love it every time we go (we're in to double figures with our visits to GK). We've been to DL over 15 times averaging at least 3 days per visit and have been to WDW a few times as well and still some of our very best character moments have occurred at GK. I think the food there is pretty darn good too, especially since it moved to its current location.

I really like going to Ariel's Grotto. I like the interior space. The tables are not all crowded together and it feels spacious. The outdoor patios is nice enough but a little less themed. I prefer to eat indoors anyway. I have liked all that I have had there. The Meatloaf is good (served only at dinner I think). The hamburger was good as was the fish and chips and the chicken soup. It is nothing spectacular...welll the meatloaf was...but it is good. The character interaction was been pretty good as well. There has been a parade with the kids and characters all around the interior and exterior of the restaurant. It is noisey but fun.

I'd highly recommend it if you have a kid who likes Ariel. Otherwise, I'd probably skip it. My daughter loves Ariel, so we eat lunch there once on every trip (I've never had dinner there). If you decide to eat here, make sure to make a PS as there is almost always a long wait during prime dining hours.

The menu is limited. If you like burgers, fish & chips, chicken pot pie, and pasta, you should like it just fine (I think there's also a salad or two). If you want something a bit "fancier", you won't find it here. The kids menu has the typical fish & chips, chicken fingers, etc. The "octopus" hot dog is really cute - they take the bottom half and slice it lengthwise into strips, then spread the strips out like the tentacles of an octopus. The kids meal dessert is cotton candy and the meal includes a little plastic bucket and shovel (like you'd use to play at the beach).

The character interaction is great. Ariel is wheeled out on a cart periodically (we usually see her twice per meal) and parked at the front of the restaurant. The kids go up for pictures and autographs, and on our last visit they did a little "circle time" where they sang songs with Ariel. After the initial rush to see Ariel when she first comes out, it usually dies down and there's a period where she's sitting there with almost no one around. On several occasions my daughter got a decent amount of quality time with Ariel because no one else was waiting to see her. Also throughout the meal Chip & Dale, Goofy, and Pluto go around the tables. Finally, about once per meal, they bring out a basket of maracas and sticks (for banging) and the kids get to choose their instrument of choice. They then "play" these while they march around the restaurant following either Goofy or Pluto.

As the other poster mentioned, Goofy's Kitchen (at the DL hotel) has better food and a greater variety of characters. Breakfast at the Plaza Inn also has Pooh characters.

We love Ariel's and we don't even have girls! LOL We've just always had a great time. I love sitting outside during the warmer weather personally, my boys have always gotten TONS of character interaction at Ariels(they love Goofy and Chip n Dale)and we've always had good food(I always get the onion soup and Cobb salad)We love Goofy's too, especially for breakfast it's such a good way to get started! But, for lunch it's Ariel's. More laid back and calm a nice break.

Oh and lunch is a bit cheaper than dinner but doesn't include dessert. And instead of bringing mints to the table they bring a big plate of cotton candy for everyone!(my youngest's favorite part! LOL)
