Has anyone flew Airtran recently? I almost always fly Southwest, and decided upon taking Airtran due to being able to book earlier in advance. How is the check in, boarding, flight, and so forth? Airtran newbie here just wanting to know. ;)

They are fine. I am flying them in October. Do a search of this board... your exact question has been asked many times lately...

We are flying airtran on Tuesday to return from FL to MD. We are not in Orlando but we have flown to and from Orlando on Airtran and have had no problems. I am sure you will love them. I like having assigned seats....vs. no assigned seating with SW. I think the SW works better for people with small children.

We have had good experiences with AirTran - I have actually found them friendlier to deal with when talking on the phone or by email than the "big" airlines. (And I LOVE their direct flight MOline to Orlando). You can't pick your seat when you book unless you pay a much higher fare. You can log on to their website or call 1-800-AIR-Tran within 24 hrs. of your flight to pick your seats.

If you are travelling with childern or other persons requiring assistance and so forth, try emailing them as soon as you book and tell them the situation and ask for assigned seats. We did that last year when we were 4 adults travelling with 4 children. I specifically asked to be seatted together in 2 rows with 3 seats and 1 row of 2 seats adjacent to one of the row of 3. I got a response the next day that they assigned us seats just like I asked and near the middle of the plane - it never hurts to ask, if assigned seats are a concern to you.

One thing though - they tend to NOT email you when there is a schedule change. We have never had a really big schedule change, but I always go onto their website periodically, especially within a week before your flight, to see if anything has changed.

I think you will be happy with them.

We just flew from Westchester to Orlando direct on Airtran and had no problems at all. Like the previous poster stated you can't reserve your seat until 24 hours prior but for $69.00 each way it really wasn't a big deal. For our return flight I just had someone back home do it for me as I was on the beach at that time pirate:

On the way down we were given a beverage and a cookie (8:20 am flight) and on the return flight it was pretzels and a beverage. (6:20 pm flight). Due to the liquid ban on flights, they even came around with water for anyone who wanted it.

Our plane was a 717 which sat 3 across on one side and 2 across on the other. The 4 of us sat on the 2 across side. There is XM radio on board and you get free (to keep) head phones to listen with.

The staff and crew were very nice and I'd gladly fly Airtran again.
