How important is resort location to you?

How important is a (DVC) resort's location?

  • VERY important - I won't buy points if I don't like the locale

  • Important - But it isn't the deciding factor

  • Unimportant - I don't care as long as I'm at WDW!

I find the argument that OKW is too far away from everything perplexing.
It is not that OKW is too far away from everything, it is more that OKW is really not much more conveniently located than many off site timeshares are to parks, etc., and a DVC membership costs a great deal more money than a offsite timeshare does.
The actual drive time from some offsite timeshares is really not that much longer than drives from OKW. I have been to both resorts with a car at both (OKW and my friend's off site timeshare) and OKW was not "much faster".
Also many people do not want to drive while on vacation and also many people enjoy the very pleasant stroll through Epcot and take the monorail to MK which eliminates the need for a bus. I would rather walk through the beautiful park Epcot to get to a MKL bound monorail, or the very nice walk to International Gateway for Epcot access, or take the very nice pathway or boat to MGM than walk from a parking lot, deal with trams, etc., anyday.

Well, they do run buses from OKW, so if you don't want to drive, you certainly don't have to!

It seems to me that when DH and I go by oursleves, we end up at OKW. When we are going with other folks, we tend to try and end up at one of the BW locations...either BCVs or BWVs. I guess going with a group puts us in more of a "hustle bustle" mood and going alone puts us in more of a "relax and get away from it" mood.

As a previous poster said, isn't it nice that DVC offers something for every taste?

With the greatest respect , you're talking tosh. I know you have a big thing about OKW, but OKW is right in the middle of WDW. The nearest off site timeshare is , I believe, Vistana and that is at least 10 drive further away. Considering it's 3 minutes from OKW to BW, it would be equally (in)correct to say that BWV/BCV is really not much more conveniently located than OKW is to the parks etc.., and the dues at both BW and BCV ( as well as the higher initial outlay) mean that both cost (a great deal) more money than OKW. I like all the DVC resorts, and each has it's own character and it's own strengths and weaknesses. I understand that for you, the strengths of the location of BWV is an overriding factor, but I do think that it seems to be clouding your vision from seeing that for most other people what you see as a hideous flaw just isn't a big issue. Certainly not as big an issue, to some, as the extra $$ that you're happy to pay for the superior access to Epcot and having half a dozen restaurants within a short walk.

For someone that wants a close and convenient location to DTD-- OKW, SSR and the moderate and value resorts are the closest resorts by far.
Your geography skills seem to be a little lacking, the value resorts ( i.e. All Star resorts) are about as far from DTD as it's possible to get on Disney property (without scurrying off into the woods) granted the yet to be opened Pop Century is/will be very convenient, but it isn't open as yet.

Well I guess your reading comprension skills are a little bit lacking then? ;) I don't see how what you said is at odds with what DeeP said. DeeP said if you want to be convenient to DTD, OKW and SSR are "the closest resorts by far." What does that have to do with how far the all stars are from DTD? I guess I'm confused.

With regard to my feelings about OKW, they weren't meant to "knock" it. That's just how I feel about it. I don't understand why people say that the "hustle and bustle" of the boardwalk is too busy for them because we find that once you are inside the villas building, it's as quiet as anywhere else. At least I don't have to worry about a golfer rooting around right outside my window for their golf ball (really freaked me out the first time I was at OKW to hear scratching noises, open the door to the patio and find a golfer on it). BUT I don't take people feeling like the boardwalk has too much "hustle and bustle" to be an insult.

To me, it's about perception more than actual distance. To me, getting in my car and driving everywhere is not vacation. That's what I do every day. I live in an apartment that is laid out like a condo complex and we drive to our spot in front of our unit and carry our own groceries in and carry our own luggage in and out when we travel. To me, this experience is not vacation. To me, vacation is driving the car up, having valet take care of it and having bell services deliver my luggage to my room. We do get the car to go to DTD at night, and the boat wouldn't do us any good because we return after the boat has stopped running. When I stayed at my parents' offsite timeshare with them, the routine was much the same. Pile into the car parked right outside your condo and drive to the parks. This is not what *I* want in a vacation. It's not magic for me.

Getting in a bus is not vacation. I hate having to sit and wait for a bus (or even worse, stand and wait, that kills my feet more than walking does). I would MUCH rather be strolling somewhere, seeing the sights and hearing the sounds and smelling the smells of WDW (and not the sight of the bus or the sound of the bus or the smell of the diesel fuel). I hate the hard seats. I hate the way a billion sweaty people are crammed into them. I hate having to hang on for dear life as it goes around turns. This is not a vacation to me, this is my daily commute (though we do have padded seats on the DC metro)! Oddly enough, cram me into a monorail and i am perfectly happy. It must be the view or just knowing I am on the monorail. Maybe it's the recording. Who knows, but to me, it's vacation.

All of the things I said above are how *I* feel. Everyone else is entitled to define vacation the way they want for the reasons they have. My parents love their offsite timeshare and would never pay extra to stay onsite (though I want to take them and show them what they are missing). They've had it for over 16 years now and they've seen the world with it. They feel like it was one of the best purchases that they ever made.

DVC costs a lot, and I would not have bought into it unless it came really close to my ideal vacation. Ideal for me is the deluxe hotel experience. We love room service. I LOVE the fact that we can get a gourmet meal from the fine restaurants available at the various deluxe resorts with DVC components brought up to our room. I love that they will set the table complete with white tablecloth and that i can sit in my pajamas and watch a movie and enjoy a gourmet meal. I love that we can have a hot breakfast brought up for the same. My husband and I don't get to spend enough couple time together so we cherish the opportunity to have our own private restaurant. Sure, I could order a pizza from pizza hut but I can do that at home. I want experiences I can't have at home.

Different strokes for different folks, but I don't understand why it is that whenever someone says what THEY like, everyone has to assume that they are saying anything they DON'T like is bad. I don't like the location of OKW/SSR. That doesn't mean it's bad, it means I don't like it. The poll asked how important location was to people in buying into DVC and my answer reflected that.

I have found that on this board as long as your opinion or likes are not saying anything even slightly negative/con about OKW it is fine, if not then it is bad, or bashing etc. Any and all negative comments/cons regarding any of the other DVC resorts though are moe than welcomed here and the more downgrading or untrue the statement is, the funnier some people find it. Really makes you wonder, especially when those that make the repeated downgrading remarks about other DVC resorts beside OKW then stay at these very crammed, awkward, noisy, etc DVC resorts! Personally, after staying at a resort several times and finding it does not suit me nor provide the quality of vacation I want, I do not stay there again, and I will change trip dates rather than stay in a resort I do not like and waste my vacation time and pts. I guess it is not the same for others--they choose to stay at the crammed, awkward, etc resorts and then continue to downgrade them and complain about them.

When we purchased in 1998 we toured OKW and BWV. For our personal needs OKW was the hands down winner. We have a great dislike for hotels. Although we enjoy the BW area and go there quite often we would rather be in a drive up villa at OKW any time. Location was never a consideration for us. We can get in our car and be anywhere in WDW in 10 to 15. This includes all the theme parks, resort hotels and their restaurants and DTD.

We were ready to buy at BCV, which was okay with us, since EPCOT is our favorite park. But we were thrilled when we were offered points at VWL, which I guess isn't an ideal location when you consider we don't have kids and don't frequent MK as much as the other parks. But we do love the seclusion of it. I had to go with important but not a deciding factor.

OKW was for theming, layout, room size, point chart, maintenance fees and cost of resale.

BCV was for location, SAB, our love for Beach Club resort and 11 month window for early December stays there.

Location is important to me which is why I love our Boardwalk home. Very close to the action of both Epcot and MGM.

That's the great thing about DVC there is something for everyone. Some people love OKW, some love VWL, we love BWV. I think the location of SSR is good and if I was looking at more points I would think about it, but we aren't looking.
