How Important Are Those Twelve Extra Years?

I'm curious as to the perceived value of the 12 extra years of ownership. It seems to be a DVC selling feature that really resonates with those that bought SSR.

So the question: How important a factor is the longer term for you in past, present or future buying decisions?

I will be 92 in 2042 - with my family history I would be dead before then - so I am not interested in 2054.

location over the next 38 years was more important to us. we'll be 67 when our BWV contract ends. we figure if we still enjoy going to WDW (which we will!), we'll have added points at SSR (or another new resort) by then or will pay for rooms with an annual pass discount or something.

It was important to me that my kids would still have a little of Disney left by us for them.

I personally see it as just another selling ploy. My own kids will be in there 40's when my contract runs out at BWV. They use the 12 years so you'll buy at SSR and not a resale at another resort ( even though you may prefer another one ) There whole bussiness is selling resorts and they try to limit the offers to a specific time frame also. I never buy anything on vacation including a timeshare so when I purchased I went home and thought about it and ended up buying several months later and getting a better deal.

We will be very happy to be able to enjoy our OKW and BCV contracts until they expire. For younger members or those that might want to leave a legacy gift it might be very important to have the longer contract.

99.95% of the selling point for me was location. I love DTD and being able to end all my evenings there and then walk back to my room sold me. The other .05% was the extra 12 years.

its a HUGE plus. We could die tomorrow so dying before we get to use the DVC till the end is the least of our worries and has very little to do with why we bought SSR.

The benefit is someone will be using this membership for 12 years longer than they would have if we chose another home resort for pretty near the same price

76 here when my BWV contract expires.

My kids will be 40 and 41. Either their families will have their own contracts at whatever resort Disney sells 35 years from now, or they won't. I'm not going to guess what my children might be interested in or able to afford as adults.

These last 33 yrs., (every year, and sometimes twice or 3 times like last year + DL) have been just wonderful !!

In 38 yrs. , I'll be 97 and looking for a new DVC to buy..Hee-Hee!!

I'll be 89 in 2042 and DH will be 94. We did not buy for the family - we bought for us. I plan to sell or give it away to kids long before then - I keep telling my DD and DGD they'll get it if they can afford the annual fees and promise to take me as much as I'm taking them!!!!!!

We bought almost 10 years ago, so we are 10 years ahead. Having an extra 12 years means I'd still be enjoying it while I was dead for about 10 years. I know WDW is close to heaven, but not THAT close. Don't see the benefit for us.

I have a different take.

I am not buying SSR for 50 years... I am buying it for 10 years. Then I will sell it and buy the next resort that they offer for 50 years (ten years from now).

It seems that DVC prices rise for the first several years... but of course they have to decrease in value at some point. I don't know when that it is... but at some point... it has to reach zero dollars since it is a RTU.

I have two choices:

a) Buy a 38 year contract that will start decreasing in value at some point.,, maybe soon.
b) Buy a 50 year contract that has historically, (and will possibly) increase in price for some number of years... before it starts decreasing in value.

I would rather own an asset that has the best probablity of increasing in value, rather than decreasing.

So I will own SSR for about 10 years... and sell it when DVC offers a new resort with a new 50 year contract... and start the cycle all over again.

so for everyone who is saying they dont care about the 12 years because they wont be around anymore, is it then safe to assume that the whole benefit of being able to pass these contracts on after passing is of no use to you?

the extra 12 yrs is important for our family trust..........DVC is now embedded in our family and we paln on passing this tradition to our kids and grandkids................it has become a lifestyle and that is why we added on at SSR and the extra 12 yrs was the main reason

I think that the extra 12 years should be a very nice hook for a new DVC owner, whether they think they'll live to use it or not.

For us though, we drank the Kool Aid and followed the mantra to buy where we wanted to stay the most.

VWL and BWV contracts....the best Kool Aid I've ever tasted!

So if we wanted more points, we'd probably add-on to the existing resorts because rather than opt for SSR and the extra 12 years.

Wow, I'm impressed! Considering that here on the DIS - unlike the vast majority of DVC owners - we know all the options available to us, over 40% of DIS DVC voters consider the extra 12 years important....

I will be in the Great DVC in the Sky by the time my membership ends. I am not making a purchase soon (I promised my husband), but if I did, it would be SSR for the extra years. I plan to hand this to my kids and grandkids as part of my legacy (Disney Grandmother). We own at the BCV and I love it there. Best of both worlds! Sandie B

If we were younger or had a desire to leave DVC as a legacy gift, the extra years would be great, but that is not our situation -- so no value to us.

It's a risky bet that 38 years from now you or your legacy will enjoy WDW the way they do today... too much can happen in that timeframe

IMO a much better legecy for your family would be to invest that money in a college fund, or other investment... If they still love disney by then, they can buy an "old" SSR contract for pennies on the dollar.
