How I'm saving with popcorn

Actually I was just watching a cooking show. I think it was Giada. She placed the oil in the pan with one kernel. Once that kernel popped, she new the oil was ready. Dumped the rest of the kernels in and it came out perfect.

I always use 3 kernels. My niece asked my why, and all I could say was that was the way her Mom (my big sis) taught me to do it!

I love my whirly pop, but I don't love cleaning it. I may need to give the brown paper bag a try :).

I have an air-popper too. I buy the popcorn seasoning salt at Sam's, but like to switch up what we use. Sometimes kind of Italian type seasonings, sometimes taco seasoning, etc...

Here is a cute video that shows how to pop corn on the stove top. She puts curry seasoning, but you don't have to use that. It is just a nice visual for those who are more visual learners. :)

I recently discovered that I can buy a package of unpopped popcorn and by placing it in a brown paper bag in the microwave it's just the same as the prepackaged stuff. I put it in for 2 min 15 seconds. It has no fat and is a whole lot cheaper than the other stuff.

Do you just fold the top of the bag over and it stays closed?

I used to have an air popper popcorn maker. Anyone remember those? :)

Still have one and still use it.

I had a friend from Kansas. His parents had a farm, and would ship to him these ears of corn - they were only about 5 inches long. He would put the ear of corn in the bag and microwave it. It was the best popcorn I have ever tasted.

I am addicted to the chemical oil in microwave popcorn. :rotfl: I sold my hot air popcorn popper in a garage sale for 2.00. Just didn't taste the same and I don't like to add butter after the fact because the popcorn tastes soggy to me.

I may try going back to the stove top method with oil. That worked when I was a kid.

Anyone else having a jiffypop flash back?

I always keep my popcorn in the freezer.

The soggy is because of the new healthier stuff most buy, I look for a cheap one, usually it has all the bad stuff in it and the popcorn does not come out soggy. We went thru a real trial and error finally got a generic brand a kroger that does the trick. Even tried real butter and had no better luck with it.

Have you tried letting the machine run a minute or two, without popcorn, to blow the "staleness" out of the chamber...then add the popcorn.

The manual that came w/ mine suggested that.

Yes, I've tried that. When it didn't come out great normal I googled for all sorts of tips and tried them with no luck.
