I'm, as usual, way behind in processing my photos, but I thought I'd put together a few shots from things that I have gotten processed so far. Hardly a comprehensive rundown of my summer, but a couple mildly interesting things. :)

I generally don't like going to "festivals" but I usually end up getting dragged along to the Lilac Festival, which is a pretty big one. I took along a camera for the first time - it figures that it was very windy that day, making photography very difficult! I got very few sharp photos with my macro lens.

This guy stood still for me though... but I didn't want to get too close and scare him and didn't have a chance to put on a longer lens.

Another non-flower shot.

Another festival is the Harbor and Carousel Festival, which is more of a little carnival. We skipped the main event but did watch the fireworks from my father's boat. I posted some elsewhere, but here's one to show you what it looks like when you do the standard fireworks technique (tripod, remote shutter release, bulb mode) from a boat that's rocking back and forth.

In June, we finally got back to Watkins Glen International, we hadn't been to the racetrack since before my son was born - so it'd probably been four years or so. As a "test", we went to the Historic Races for one day, which is a relatively small event. We're going back in a couple weeks to the Vintage Races, which is much larger, and we'll camp at the track so we'll have more time there next time. Anyway, here's a few shots...

The paddocks are a place where HDR might come in handy; the dynamic range is pretty huge.

Surprise surprise... rain! The weathersealing of the K20D came in handy many times this summer, and it's always fun to see the cars racing in the rain.

2008WG-Historic-15.jpg

Racetracks give you plenty of chances to practice your panning... I also was experimenting with what shutter speed would give blurred tires and wheels but keep the car sharp.

2008WG-Historic-21.jpg

A fun thing about these kind of events is to see the wide variety of cars out there racing.

OK, one for the Nascar fans... this is as close as I'll probably ever be to taking Nascar photos. :)

I have a soft spot for Porsche 914s, especially since I used to own one, but mine certainly wasn't this nice. I like this shot as it shows how hard they go through this turn, note how low the left side of the car is.

Restricted!

It started to rain again, harder this time. Mostly visible as "blotchiness" in the Viper photo, easier to see in the shot with the Mustang and the 914.

There's many more but I can see the non-car-fans dozing off so I'll move on. :teeth: A few days later, we caught an outdoors show of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. There was some rain (visible in the first shot) - it's been very wet in Rochester the past couple months!

Anyway, it was a great concert, and my first attempt at shooting a concert (outside of live shows at Disney.) The results were... ehh, it gives me something to improve upon next time. I actually had been having minor focus issues so the sharpness wasn't always there, I corrected it soon after this concert.

There were plenty more shots from the summer but I haven't processed them yet. ;) So maybe there'll be more later...

ah...Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. I was at a convention that they performed at for the banquet. I was very excited to see them on the program as usually it's been an old time DJ! Let's see - how do I say this.....this particular convention has a large attendance from a generation that is a bit older than I am. The president of the association at that time was also from that generation. He had no idea who this group was and completely botched the introduction. Within the first 15 minutes over 1/2 of the people left - we're talking around 300 to 400 people - just so embarrassing. :sad2: But, those of us who stayed heard a great concert. And what a perfect photo op it would have been! It would have been zero problem to walk up as close as you wanted to.

Enjoyed all the pics!

Very nice Groucho.
I like the B+W bicycle shot best. But.............only one fisheye shot. You feeling ill? ;) :rotfl:

Thanks! BBVD was great, it's only the second time I've seen them and both were at free outdoor concerts. I'd be happy to pay 'em if I had the chance. :) Their current project is a Cab Calloway cover album, Cab was born in Rochester so it was cool on that level, too.

Very nice Groucho.

Thanks about the b&w shot, I like it too. But you're right, I dropped the ball (no pun intended) on the relative lack of fisheye shots. :lmao: It is mounted on the camera right now, and I did use it some more for later events of the summer. I love that lens. :teeth:

Great Shots Groucho!

Really enjoyed the Watkins Glen shots. I too like the 914s. When I used to autocross, there was a father and son that both raced 914s. The dad had the 6 and the son a 4. Both painted BRIGHT orange!

My favorite shot was of the tires in the paddock. Really nice:thumbsup2

Thanks! Signal Orange is a common 914 color, there were a few orange ones there too. We're headed to the Vintage Races in a couple weeks and the Brumos orange 914s (and other Porsches) are always there. It's an underrated car, mostly due to its rather awkward looks. But that meant that I could buy one for extremely cheap, and it's astoundingly practical, with massive storage space and room for 3 in the pinch - I fit that many several times. ;) I also had 5-point safety harnesses in mine, they always got a lot of comments.

The father son team with the 914's here were longtime 914 fans. The son drove his as a daily driver even though the suspension would rattle your teeth. It was actually the faster of the two, even with the 4 cylinder.

Funny about the 5 point harness, I had one in my Mazda Protoge and when I would take it on business and valet park in the hotels, I would always get really strange looks from the valets :rotfl2:

If you get anymore vintage shots, I would love to see them. One of my collegues around here used to vintage race a Porsche 906. He just recently passed away so I haven't been to see any races lately.

I've got 84 shots from this year's Historic Races on my gallery here if you'd like to see some more. I have a few other older competition galleries there, too, though no older vintage races (yet). I do have an IMSA race from a while ago that includes a Bugatti EB110 (not the current one) race car - that is something that you don't see every day!

Great pics of BBVD!!! I remember seeing them in DC at some of the clubs there - would love to see them again! Brings me back to my old swing/lindy hop dancing days!

Groucho, as usual, GREAT shots!!!! Tell me - were all these with the K100D or one of the others? Gives other Pentax owners (like me for example :lmao: ) something to shoot for!!

Love the pics!! Your race shots are amazing! It is so hard to do. Do you usually use 1/180 to 1/250? I'm practicing my panning for next weekend at the Poconos. I plan on lowering my shutter speeds. The shots from my sons race in Millville all came out but it looks like he's standing still when he was flying by at 128mph.

Anymore vintage car shots? I used to have a Mercedes 190sl hard top convertable. I would love to see one again.:cloud9:

They will be playing at WDW on September 26th and 27th. Head down there. ;)

The exif data is still in all the shots if you're curious about shutter speeds. It varied for me, depending on the location - the first couple shots are taken down the back straight of the Glen, where the cars are going their fastest, so you need a fairly quick shutter speed. Still, the Cobra shot was taken there at only 1/125th, so you can get by with that sometimes. I think that most of the shots were taken at 1/350th, with a few at 1/500th and a few early ones at 1/750s - at that shutter speed, it's difficult to tell that the car is moving at all.

More shots are in the link I mentioned above, I have a ton more in film but not so many in digital. Not many Benz images, though I probably have a few 300SL gullwing shots - I remember being next to one at a car show at the Glen one time, I think with my Elan but maybe the 914. Nice guy, bought the car when it was cheap and hung on to it.

Absolutely great shots! I always like your fisheye shots.
Thanks! I have more fisheye shots in later shoots, too. :teeth:

Whoops, sorry, forgot to answer this one. :)

Those were all taken with my K20D. But the K100D would do comparable in most cases, I think, except maybe for the AF performance when shooting at the race track. And maybe a little more noise in the BBVD shots. And of course, there's much more detail in the full-size versions, but that is lost in the web resizing. Actually, one difference is the weathersealing - some of the Glen and BBVD shots were taken in the rain, which I'd be nervous about with the K100D, but with the K20D and DA* 50-135mm lens, I have no qualms about shooting in whatever Mother Nature can throw at me.

At this point, the wife uses the K100D primarily, she took this shot at the Glen with it of me and my son hard at work. :)

I have one other question Groucho; I see that you have both the 50-135mm F2.8, and the 50-200mm. Which do you like best/recommend? The 50-135 because of the larger aperture or the 50-200 for the longer range? I currently have the Tamrom 70-300, but I'm starting to keep my eyes out for a new lens. :rolleyes1 I'm sure you remember, but I have the kit lens, the Tamron, and then the 50mm f/1.4, and now I'm not sure where to go from here. Suggestions? :worship:

Really nice shots, Groucho.

I've always had a soft spot for the Shelby Cobra 427... one of the absolute sexiest (can I use that term on the DIS?) auto body designs ever, IMO. Oh, and BBVD always puts on a great show. I always recommend people go see them and the Brian Setzer Orchestra whenever they come to town (which unfortunately isn't much around here)... just fantastic music.

Well, they're really different lenses. (As they should be, considering the 50-135mm is over 3.5x the cost of the 50-200mm!) The 50-200mm is nice and small and light, easy to carry, has decent results, and I have no real problem with it. But it's not particularly fast and I'm sure it doesn't have the optical quality of the 50-135mm. The faster lens is much larger and heavier (though not unmanageably so, it's about half the weight of the Canon 70-200mm F2.8 for example) It's also weathersealed, which I love (there was rain at both the Glen and the BBVD concert.)

Really nice shots, Groucho.

Thanks! Since I've been short on fisheye shots this thread, I'll throw in an extra Cobra shot from an LA cruise night last year. Yes, this was a real one!

Since we're on the second page, I'll add some more summer event shots... this was a visit to the Parkside Whispering Pines miniature golf course, which is the oldest one in the country, designed way back in 1929. The bad news is that it shows a little bit, the greens aren't exactly billiard-table smooth. :) But it's still a fun time. I spent a little more time tweaking levels on these shots and am fairly happy with the results.

On one of the holes, you climb onto a little platform and have to whack the ball across a long stretch of grass to get over to the green - always a fun hole. :)

Here's my son Jack charging the 18th hole!

Here's a wider, less interesting shot, to give some more prospective.

I finished another "summer event" group of shots... here's a few pictures from the Corning Museum of Glass, appropriately enough in Corning, New York.

Two updates, no comments? Anyone still looking at this? Maybe I'll make the subject title more clear...
