we want to remove the shower doors that are on a bathtub...just makes it too hard to bathe our children with them on. how hard is it to remove them? they were on when we moved into the house so have no idea what the process might be. any insight?

We removed ours for the same reason. It was easy. The doors themselves just pop out of the track. The track top can then be popped off. The sides and bottom were held on with some adhesive. I don't remember how DH took them off but it didn't make much of a mess. There were a few screw holes that we had to fill in with waterproof caulk. I also put up a decorative curtain around the outside of the tub to hide the few marks that were left on the outside walls. Good luck!

I did the same thing in our master bath shower. The doors were old and nasty and the track never drained so we always had standing water. First I took the top off, it was just sitting on the top, no fasteners. Then I took the doors off by lifting them out. The side pieces unscrewed and the bottom was helod on by adhesive so I pryed them off with a pry bar. I filled the holes left in the sides with clear silicone and I was done!

SO SO SO much better! No more nasty standing water or mold and much easier to clean.

thanks! the doors are actually very pretty (shocking because I never usually like shower doors) but so impractical. Sounds like something we should be able to tackle. :) knock wood, anyway.

Oddly enough my DH just did this to make it easier to bath our son. He just unscrewed everything and lifted the doors out. The only problem is that we now have old caulking or glue around the tub as well as anchor holes in the side tile. I think we are just going to have it refitted eventually. The shower doors were so gross! We cleaned all the time, but the goop that was underneath..ewwww.

I was thinking about installing shower doors on my tub, I might rethink that now.

Just don't do what I did. When I was 16, I was upset about something and punched the shower door. The whole thing shattered and fell on me. I still have the huge scar on my foot to remind me of my temper. ;)

Don't know if you have kids or plan to have them, but I would rethink them.

Rethink the kids or the shower doors? They must be some BEAUTIFUL doors if you are rethinking the kids:rotfl2: :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

We removed the sliding shower doors at the old house too. They looked nice but were a HUGE pain to clean. It was really easy that I was upset with myself for leaving them up so long.

The doors popped off and my huband just unscrewed the pieces on the sides. The track on the lip of the tub was held on by an adhesive that he just pried off. He then used a scraper and some kind of solution (check Lowes or Home Depot) to remove the adhesive. It came right off. The only thing we had were some screw holes in the tile on the sides. We didn't bother because they shower curtain covered, but they could have easily been filled in with caulk.

I loved how easy my bathroom was to clean after I got rid of the horrid doors. I literally spent 45 minutes a week on those things so that they wouldn't look like the awful "old-lady" shower doors I remember from my grandmothers house.

just took our out of a new home -about 2 wks ago simple -just a few holes in the tile where the screws were...it is soooo much better now with just a curtain...they were horrible to clean and the previous owner didn't do all that well since she was real old.

Shower doors are right up with chain link fences on my list of things never to install at a house. We have a house from the '30s and have removed both of those things because they are such pains. Gunk in the shower :crazy2:; relentless vines and huge weeds along the fence :headache:.

We just did that for my mom at her house over the weekend. There is a deglazing tool at your local home improvement store that is just the right tool for removing old caulk and crud. Hers cleaned up quite nicely.

I think we'll remove the doors in an upstairs bathroom this weekend.
