We often do split stays...in fact most of our stays are.
Travelling as light as possible helps. We usually have a car so we transport luggage ourselves, but will probably try the Disney transfer someday. My dh usually gets up early and checks in at the new resort and then comes back to help pack etc. We don't go to the parks too often so we usually head to the pool at the new resort. if it is SSR, we may head straight to the SPA for a relaxing sauna or steam to start the day.
In March we are travelling with young kids and this will likely made transfers more work. Our teenagers are planning to take their little nieces to the Magic Kingdom for the transfer day. They'll take the boat from VWL in the morning and return to SSR later in the day.
Splits stays can really make it feel like you have had two vacations.
