Just rec'd a Ipod Touch 32GB. I am just learning technology. My son is nuts for Toy Story 1 and 2. I'd love to get them on this Ipod so I can allow him to watch on go in a pinch when you need a quiet 3 year old. Is it possible to get the DVD onto the Ipod by loading through my home computer, or must I pay for a digital copy?

There's this nasty little thing called a copyright. There is no legal way to convert your DVDs to ipod without violating that law. But if you have no problem with doing this, there are plenty of free software programs out there that will do this. I wouldn't pay $40 for software to convert two movies when I can buy the digital copy for half that amount.

Yes it can be done (especially easily) on a Mac, BUT I think copyrights forbid it.

I am not entirely sure though... I think there is something about having the right to back up your own stuff, but I think bypassing the copy protection might be illegal.

If you have a Mac... look into Handbrake, it is freeware.

There is also a free Handbrake program for the PC.

I have absolutely no moral problem with "ripping" a movie that I already own. If I paid for the physical DVD, there's no way that I'm going to pay for a digital copy as well.

Freemake Video Converter - hands down the best and easiest. you"ll thank me

I never would have thought this could possibly be a copyright issue. I bought the DVD and need it on a portable Ipod for my son to watch. So if you buy a CD is it illegal to put in onto your computer or Ipod, technically?

Thanks for tips on that Free Vid Converter

I am pretty sure it is legal to put a CD onto your iPod - in fact when you put a CD in your computer iTunes asks if you would like to convert it.

I really don't see how a DVD would apply differently!

I use a program called handbrake and it puts movies onto my ipod touch. I think it's legal as long as you own it legally and you're just putting in on the device for yourself. I think technically you can make copies of it on DVD is , let's say you have a DVD player in your mini van but you don't want to risk your discs being scratched on a road trip. You paid for it and as long as you're not giving it to someone who didn't pay for it, you're cool.

Different copyright laws apply to videos. Music can be copied for your personal use but your cannot make a copy and share it with your friend. Every DVD has an FBI warning regarding copyright law for video. If there weren't a problem with just transferring it to your ipod or other digital device then the studios would not encrypt the digital media and they would not include a digital copy with the DVD/Blu-ray purchase.

I know it doesn't make sense that you *can* copy your music but you *can't* copy a movie. But certain lobbyists have a lot more influence on our government lawmakers than others do.

It is perfectly legal to copy a DVD you paid for to other media (hard drive, Ipod, etc) for your personal use. However, all DVDs are protected to prevent mass copying for resale which makes personal copying difficult at best. You can try the software mentioned above without any risk of breaking the law.

so what am I doing wrong...which format do I pick to play the converted movie on my i-touch 3rd gen? I can't get it to work. I can get the movie to convert, but I cannot get it on my ipod (and yes I have plenty of space).

this was the highest rated by several sites when I got it (about 2 years ago) I find it very easy to use

I always understood copying your own dvds to another device for your personal use is protected by the fair use law....technically the illegal thing is selling the software to circumvent the incryption, but the use of the software is not
