How four DVC members ate for less than the cost of a dining plan (with pics).

I’m not trying to convince anyone not to use a dining plan, but merely illustrating an alternative, especially for anyone on the fence. I do question the idea that the dining plans “save you money”, especially if you are taking home 20 snacks to use up the credits, or eating things you normally would not eat. :confused3 As DVC members we have some decent discounts, such as 20% off at Chefs de France, Nine Dragons, Restaurant Marakesh, and many of the Dolphin/Swan restaurants. We also get 10% off at Ghiradelli’s (which has the best ice cream sundaes at WDW and is not on any dining plan:thumbsup2) and Wolfgang Puck Express. DVC members also have access to excellent discounts on AP’s which in turn make us eligible for the TIW discount. We can save a lot with all of these discounts.

We are a family of four with two teens who live 90 miles from Disneyland. We are WDW and Disneyland veterans, having been to WDW more than 20 times and Disneyland many, many more times than that. We have AP’s for WDW, Disneyland, Universal, and all the Sea World/Busch Gardens parks. Each trip to WDW has been at least 10 – 20 days long, with most of them being 15 nights. We always do a 1br because we enjoy having the space with our two teens. The kitchen is a plus for us and we do make use of it. We have never done the DDP because we have never spent as much on food as what the DDP would cost us. We considered the QSDP this trip, but we do enjoy a few TS meals out from time to time, and prefer to use the TIW card when we do eat at TS. We also do not need to eat dessert with every meal, nor do we need two additional desserts per day, which is what most of the snack credits are good for. We went on this trip just planning to follow our normal eating patterns and we did not bother making in dining ressies because we hate having a schedule to follow. We ate most breakfasts in our room. We ate primarily quick service places. I did not eat a single fast food hamburger or French fry the entire trip. We did eat TS at Chefs de France and Beaches and Cream using our Tables in Wonderland 20% discount, (though we could have also used our DVC discount at Chefs). We were able to walk right in to those two restaurants without a ressie. We ate at Wolfgang Puck Express twice using $100 worth of gift cards I purchased for $79.99 (20% discount) online at Costco.com, plus a 10% DVC discount at the restaurant. We also ate at Bahama Breeze and Romano’s Macaroni Grill using gift cards I had received from students throughout the year. Bahama Breeze accepts gift cards from Olive Garden also, and Romano’s accepts gift cards from Chili’s and On the Border. I had various gift cards from those restaurants, so they added up to two meals for the four of us. We spent about $100 on groceries at the SuperTarget, which included water bottles for the entire trip, breakfast items, and snack items for our room. We also cooked one dinner in our OKW kitchen to take a break from the eating out.

to be continued...

We were in Florida a total of 18 nights, and at Disney a total of 11 nights. We spent time in Miami and Universal also, but I did not include any of those meals in these totals. We spent a total of $1143.74 on food. The DDP would have cost us $1759.56. The QSDP would have cost us $1319.56. If I didn’t have the gift cards for Bahama Breeze and Romano’s Macaroni Grill (or if we didn’t have a car to go offsite), I would need to add an additional $200 for two more TS meals at Disney, or about $100 more for two CS meals at Disney. Even adding the cost of two more meals, brings our total to less than what the DDP would cost and about the same as what the QSDP would cost.

We never skimped on any meals and ate what we chose to eat. We had dessert about once a day (occasionally twice a day) and had snacks whenever we felt like it. We had appetizers and desserts at Chefs de France and at Beaches and Cream.

We were happy with our choice as always.

Now, on to the photos.

We are going for a week and do not have any planned sit-down dinners inside WDW. We plan on eating all dinners off site or in room, breakfasts in room, and lunches at DTD since we are in the Tree Houses. It has me a bit apprehensive, but I think we'll be fine especially after reading your post. Thanks

French roll with real butter, not that fake stuff so prevalent at Disney now.
WDWSummer09095.jpg

We always have enjoyed lunch at Chefs and were a bit dismayed to hear that they added this character to the restaurant. It is so not needed and there are way too many character meals now. However, this is very tasteful and subtle and the waiter is quite funny. It is not intrusive and you do not have a bunch of bratty kids running around the table. Good job Disney!
WDWSummer09093.jpg

Bisque de Homard - lobster bisque $6.25
WDWSummer09097.jpg

Soupe a l'oignon gratinee - the classic onion soup topped with Gruyère cheese $5.95

WDWSummer09427.jpg

WDWSummer09426.jpg

Tomato and mozzarella salad.

Strawberry shortcake and key lime "pie". Even though they call this key lime pie, it's more like a lime jello mousse thing. It was gross. The strawberry shortcake was only slightly better. I'm not sure why people rave about these desserts when World Showcase has lots of way better sweets.

Get the fish and chips at Cooke's of Dublin. They are much better than the fish and chips at the UK pavilion!

:thanks: Great report!!!!! We have done the DDP twice; once free when the appetizer and tip were still included and once this past May. On the last day we were scrambling to use 20+ snack credits and forfeited 3 CS I believe. We are a family of 5; myself, DH, DD12, DD10 (who eats like a bird and is the size of an 8/yo) and DS8. Even on the DDP we share because I hate to waste food. During this last trip the CMs were more than willing to trade out a side salad or another side in leiu of dessert. :thumbsup2 We are a one dessert kinda family per day too.

Without the tip and appetizer I think we could eat cheaper too and will this next trip. :goodvibes

Cantina de San Angel

Plato Combinacion - chicken taco, beef burrito and a quesadilla served with black refried beans and Mexican salsa $9.25 This did not come with black beans. It used to, but not anymore.
WDWSummer09455.jpg

This is what they call a quesadilla. It was not good and had hardly any cheese in it. Cheese is key in a quesadilla, which had two main ingredients- a tortilla and some cheese.
WDWSummer09456.jpg

Tangierine Cafe

Shawarma Platters- served with hummus, Tabouleh, and a Tangierine CousCous Salad with a Fresh Moroccan bread
Chicken & Lamb Combo $13.95

WDWSummer09480.jpg

Lamb only.
WDWSummer09479.jpg

Pecos Bill Cafe

Tasteless cheeseburger (according to DD) and chili-cheese sauce fries. Cheese sauce on fries?
WDWSummer09500.jpg

El Pirate ye el Perico

Beef Tacos - Two corn tortillas filled with seasoned beef, served with yellow rice $5.99

Thanks for the great analysis and pictures!

We found the same thing as you. We had the original dining plan in 2006 and 2007, but used TiW last year and found that we ate healthier, were happier with what we ate, and it cost us less and resulted in less waste (who can eat every bite of every dessert you pay for on the plans?).

I'm glad you found the same thing. I was beginning to think we were uniquely unsuited to the dining plans. :)

Wow! That's some detail! ;) We also don't find that the DDP would work for us if we had to pay for it (it does when it's free though :lmao:). We do actually spend nearly the same amount per day as the plan costs, however, we don't like the rigidity of the plan with the multiple desserts either. If we're paying, I much prefer to spend OOP for what we REALLY want to eat. It seems its best value (and I can't be sure because this doesn't apply to us) is for families with children who are in the 7-9 year range who can get the reduced "kid" price. At least that's who I've seen saying that they saved money using the DDP. Great report! FYI - the cheesecake brownie is pretty good at the BWV bakery.

Roaring Fork- we ate here various times on the last 4 days of our trip.

Ham and Tillamook Cheddar - with vegetable pasta salad$8.89 and chocolate bundt cake.
WDWSummer09681.jpg

Grilled Vegetable Sandwich - with vegetable pasta salad$8.89 plus chili and a brownie.
WDWSummer09682.jpg

Tuna Salad Sandwich - with vegetable pasta salad $9.09
WDWSummer09683.jpg

Free cookie we got since no kids showed up to the cookie decorating activity. With cookies like these, I can see why nobody showed up. It was gross, especially the frosting. What is it with Disneyworld frosting?
WDWSummer09684.jpg

Make your own yogurt parfait with granola and fresh berries, cinnamon raisin bagel.
WDWSummer09795.jpg

Adult breakfast platter- eggs, hashbrowns, bacon and a dry biscuit. Really good except for the biscuit. Also an okay cherry danish.
WDWSummer09796.jpg

Cheeseburger, chocolate chip cookie and pepperoni flatbread. Saratoga Springs does not need to worry about Roaring Forks cutting into their flatbread business. The SSR flatbreads are way, way better and are always fresh and hot to order. This one was clearly made ahead of time and had a burnt cheese flavor to it, as in smoke.
WDWSummer09001.jpg

Chefs special- pasta with meat marinara. Now how can you have a meat marinara, when marinara by definition is meatless? Whatever. This was okay, but suffered also from a burnt cheese smoke smell. Roaring Forks needs to clean their oven. I did not like how it was premade. It seemed like a frozen dinner.
WDWSummer09002.jpg

Chicken noodle soup.

Many thanks for all of the time you put into this report. I shouldn't have read it on an empty stomach--it's now growling.

Judging from the kids meals, I'm not sure if it's a good value or not. Some of the stuff they serve the kids looks really bad.

That cheesecake brownie is very good, but we didn't make it over there this trip.

That's all the pics I have of WDW food. We did eat at other places where I forgot to take pictures, like Artist's Palette at SSR (the best flatbreads), Backlot Express at HS (excellent grilled veggie sandwich), Yakitori House (Japanese Curry), Boulangerie Patisserie, Kringla Bakerei, Beaches and Cream, Ghiradelli Ice Cream, Earl of Sandwich, more Wolfgang Puck Express, and Cosmic Ray's.

The only hamburgers and fries you saw pics of were eaten by DD17 and DS18. I did have chips with my fish and hash browns with a breakfast, but those are different than plain old fries. You can definitely eat a great variety at WDW, even at the CS places, and you can eat well and eat cheaper than a dining plan costs.

Thanks for the pictures and the report!

I had lunch at Chefs de France especially to meet/see Remy! We're glad we did! That desert is the best...chocolate, pastry and ice cream...I love it!!!

Bobbi:goodvibes

Wonderful report. You've got me drooling! :) I loooove the flatbreads at SSR too, so good.

Thanks for the tip regarding Wolfgang Puck gift cards. I just ordered them from Costco.
We also like to go to Bahama Breeze because we don't have that chain at home. And we use gift cards from the other chains while at WDW. I really dislike having to schedule my vacation around ADRs at WDW. We find it much more relaxing to eat when it suits our schedule and we have always been able to get into restaurants just off property with little or no wait. We frequently eat a late lunch or early dinner, then do an evening WDW activity. There is a great variety of restaurant choices within a mile either way of Crossroads Center.
