How far to work?

6 miles, slightly under 15 minutes. I've worked up to an hour from home before, and it's just not worth it. Here I can go home quickly if need be, wife can bring me something I forget, wife and kids can stop by for lunch and say hello, I can oversleep severely and still make in here on time... just not worth working farther from home.

Google Maps and Mapquest have it at about 1 hour and 15 minutes, +/- 10 minutes either way. Add in summer traffic and :eek: It would be waaay too far and long of a ride for me, but to each his own.

Golden rule for NJ commuting - work south of where you live. :thumbsup2

Couldn't agree more!

and go often. If you love it, you will do it. We live further north than you in central jersey(off 195 and exit 98 on the parkway) Our dream is to move even closer to the beach someday. But for now we pack a lunch and some towels, surfboards, boogieboards and hit the road. What beach would you go to Ventnor, Brigantine? Hope everything works out well for you. Best of luck.

It is 110 miles from my driveway to my office. About 2 1/2 hours of driving, about half of it over back roads. I don't come home every night and hate that part of the commute. I stay at my mother's which does allow me to keep an eye on her and make sure she is doing OK. It also gives me the opportunity to check on my 92 year old grandmother. A 72 year old mother taking care of her 92 year old mother definitely needs some checking up on!

I would gladly trade my commute for more time with DH and DD but when he was pushed into an early retirement, it was an economic necessity that we sell our overpriced house in southern NH and build a more modest home on land we already owned in northern NH. Getting rid of the mortgage allowed us to maintain most of our lifestyle on just my salary and his pension, and later social security. There are no jobs for someone in my field in this part of the state - in fact jobs in my field are pretty scarce outside of large cities. So we deal with the commute.

When DD starts college in the fall we are considering my staying at my mother's all week. Although that is still a one hour commute each way from the office so still not short.

Mine is 3 miles which is 10 minutes on a good day or 30 minutes on a bad day due to traffic.

I used to work 25 miles away and therfore had a 50 mile round trip every day for work. I hated it, and hated the job, but timewise due to my driving out into the country for work rather than into town meant my commute was 30 minutes each way ie open country roads with everyone heading in the opposite direction at rush hour.

My wife works half a mile from home, i drop her off on my way to work and she walks home afterwards.

Shorter commute the better imho for the time, the cost of fuel and the conveniance if you need to get home or to the kids school quick in an emergency.

My DH works long hours as well but I am a stay at home mom so he would be the only one with the commute. He says with that 50 min drive it would give him time to unwind from work.......stressful job. I say he is just trying to justify driving that far.:rotfl: He loves this house that we are considering and the idea of being to close to the beach.

My DH's commute is about 50 minutes....mostly highway driving and usually minimal traffic delays. He kind of likes it.....he likes having the time to gear up and unwind from work. He listens to his Sirius and loves it. Work is usually forgotten by the time he gets home and he is in pretty good spirits.

Since you are a SAHM and don't have to worry about daycare, it doesn't seem too bad. My commute is about 10 minutes and I have to do all the daycare pickups/drop offs. I also am the one who runs to all the doctors appointments etc since I am closest adn that is a real drain on me that my husband doesn't get.

Mays Landing is pretty close to Ocean City. My DH is all excited about surf fishing, and TRYING to get back on his surf board. :rotfl: He lived down in Ocean City when he was first out of High School and working for Pepsi. He loved it. Houses around where we are now and a few towns over are pretty expensive and need work. It seems the further you go out the less expensive they are. We are thinking of that new home being built and it is cheaper than most things we are finding.(I guess we are picky). But the further you go from your job, the more in gas you will have to pay. And that does worry me. Gas prices have already started to creep back up.

My wife and I commute together, and travel about 140 miles per day round trip. Takes us about an hour +/- each way. Its all good, life is about trade offs. We took a longer commute to get a bigger house, and some land. After renting for 15 or so years there was no way we were going to live in a condo or townhome for the same price as the new construction custom home we have on almost an acre of land.

the pay off, and view from my deck:

Things that make a long commute easier:

- a big comfortable vehicle, we drive a Honda Ridgeline, and it is safe, and rides like a Cadillac

- some music

- patience

Great View...Thanks for sharing!

My commute is about 20 minutes, and that includes dropping DD off at daycare beforehand.

DH drives 40 miles each way for his job.
