How far out should FP+ be booked?

So I'm 60 days away from my next visit, so I can start booking fast passes for my trip, but do I need to? I normally wait until I arrive at WDW to buy my park tickets (it helps spread out my costs for the trip), but will that put me at a disadvantage for fast passes? Do they ration out the FPs for the various rides so that they are not all gone in the days leading up to a trip to the parks, or is it worth buying park tickets further in advance so that I can use the 60 day window?

Thanks

It's up to you, if there are headline attractions you want to ride at specific times of day, you should consider buying your tickets and booking your FP+ reservations. Just a reminder, legacy FP machines could be going away in the next few months.

I would book a good estimate as soon as you can - you can always change them later, if there is still availability. I tried changing my selections at about 30 days and already had trouble with preferred times.

Can you book without linking tickets? We weren't going to buy our tickets until we were a couple weeks out.

No, you cannot book FP+ without linked tickets/AP pass. I would purchase them as soon as you can to take advantage of better FP+ times.

That being said, I have read that some times are reserved until day of, in theory, to permit off-site folks from grabbing some good times.

I even hand trouble on day 60. Finessing my way through the selections was not easy!

My friend is currently at Disney on a last-minute trip. She has been able to book FP+ the night before with not problems and then also change on day of with no problems. Of course, I don't know how easy this will be as more and more people start using the system. There may possibly be hidden programming allowing for greater access - e.g. resort guests, concierge guests (she is staying WL concierge level), guests with ADR in park etc.
