How far from Hollywood to DL?

DS19 is thinking about going out to CA next month for a DL audition, which will be held in Hollywood (for the Dapper Dans). The last time he was there, he was 2-1/2, and was thinking he'd like to to go DL some time during the trip (and I'd be going with him, yay). We would not be renting a car. How far is it, in time (I know, depending on the traffic) to get from the North Hollywood area to DL? Would it be worth it to go for half a day? (would be nice if they gave auditionees park passes...)

Does he have the street address or two crossing intersections for the audition in Hollywood? If so, you can google map it from there to the parks.

Or, can he inquire with the place he's auditioning (ahead of the trip) and ask them how close they are to the parks?

I was surprised how close Grauman's Chinese Theatre is to DL. We intend to go to a Cirque show while staying at DL - it's at the Kodak theatre, right next to Grauman's and it's about 4 blocks from DL. It's at Hollywood and Vine.

Google says that the Kodak Theater is 33 miles from Disneyland - so those are really *large* blocks! :rotfl:

OP - I'm sure your son has the address of the audition - I'd recommend googling the directions. The 33 miles I found it is from West Hollywood to Anaheim is apparently only about a 35 minute drive on I5 - so surely doable for an afternoon even if the traffic stretches that a bit - and especially if the parks are open late!

If there's any way you could stay near DL (rather than near the audition), you might actually be able to get more time in the parks! :thumbsup2

You aren't talking about Disneyland, right? The DL I'm thinking of is in Anaheim, about 35 miles from Hollywood.

North Hollywood is a little further. I've created a link the OP can use... http://g.co/maps/jygwa They could take Amtrak from the station at Bob Hope Airport - see the map.

In August, we took a trip from DL to Burbank & Hollywood. I can't remember how long it took us to get there but from Hollywood to DL at 5:00pm on a weekday it was 2 hours because of traffic. I once drove from DL to Universal on a Sunday afternoon and it was about 90 minutes, again with traffic.

I did Hollywood (from Kodak) to DL on a Thursday afternoon at 3:00 PM and it took me about 2 hours. I wanted to die! It took my longer to get from Hollywood to Disneyland than it took for me to get from Disneyland to my house in San Diego.

Great! I should have known better - I didn't think they were that close but I swear awhile back when I asked on this board how close the Kodak theater was to DL someone said 4 blocks. I should have googled it myself. Now we are going to have to factor in driving LA traffic from DLH to Kodak for a Sat. matinee and back. Wonder how bad that traffic will be?

In fact, here it is, post #3:

Edited: I re-read the post I linked and I think they meant AFTER you take several highways, then it's 4 blocks to the theater. Wasn't clear to me at first. Now we have to figure out what the traffic will be like and how to work around it. As Pooh would say: Oh bother.

Yes, I was talking about Disneyland, and thank you for that great map! I appreciate the trouble you went to! (I know, I could have done that myself, but my brain wasn't fully working yesterday, and I really appreciate you doing it for me!) First, we'll have to see if we're even going out for this audition (although I think there's a good chance, since I found a $200 round trip airfare). We would get in by noon on Tuesday, have Tuesday afternoon and evening to do something, audition begins at 9:30 on Wednesday -- who knows how long that would take -- and fly out at 3:30 Thursday. I'm thinking that planning on DL after the audition would be the best --then we wouldn't have to worry about staying out late before he has to sing.

Good luck! Are you flying into Bob Hope Airport, aka Burbank (BUR) or LAX? You said you aren't renting a car, so I'm assuming BUR, but it it's LAX then you have an expensive taxi ride to North Hollywood.

It looks like LAX -- I can't find a flight from O'Hare that goes to Burbank. But I think it might be best to fly into LAX, stay at a hotel in that area, taxi to the audition and back, and then take a shuttle to Disneyland (maybe change to an Anaheim area hotel for the second night so we don't have so far to go after Disneyland, although it looks like the parks close at 8 that night). It looks like there are hotels with Disney shuttles from that area. I'm not too chicken a driver -- how tough would it be with an updated GPS to drive? I'm used to Chicago traffic. I'm thinking it might be as cheap to rent a car as to use taxis and shuttles.

And what is World of Color? Is it worth getting a 2-park pass to go see that? I don't think we'd have time to really do anything at California Adventure, so it might be best just to stick to Disneyland park. If I had a ny kind of any idea what time we'd getout of the audition on Wednesday, so that we could plan on a flight back that night, I'd think about going in on Monday, doing Disneyland on Tuesday, audition on Wednesday, and fly home.

So Wednesday is your only option really to make it worthwhile. If you left Hollywood at 11AM, you could be at DL by 12PM, depending on which route you take.

I would NOT use the 5 Freeway, it is a nightmare. You can use the carpool lanes on the 110 Freeway to the 105 Freeway, 605, 91 and then the 5 for the last couple of miles. That sounds complex, but it isn't really and using the carpool lanes saves time. You can also take the 110 to the 91, but the 105/605 option moves pretty quickly.

Mmmmm, this plan sounds bad all the way around. Can't you use Midway to Burbank? Did you check Southwest? Their fares don't come up on travel sites like Expedia, etc.

Then a hotel by LAX is a bad idea in general. It is a doubly bad idea for going to an audition in Hollywood. A taxi from LAX to Hollywood and back would be much more expensive than renting a car.

If the audition is in Hollywood (or N Hollywood, I am still not clear where it is), I'd get a hotel in Hollywood and rent a car.
