How far (each way) is your commute?

I have one of those "extreme" commutes. On the way in, my commute is 55 miles and on the way home it's 60 miles (I go a slightly different way to avoid some traffic). On the way in, it takes me about 55 minutes to get there because I leave at 5:40am. On the way home it can take anywhere from 1hr 20min on a good day to 1hr 50min on a bad day. I know it would drive a lot of people insane, but I have to say it doesn't bother me all that much. I love driving, and it's sort of "me" time, since my life is nuts. The only thing that gets tough is that the kids are all very active in sports. So sometimes I can barely make it home in time to get a quick change of clothes, shove something in my mouth for dinner and run back out the door. I've had a long commute for years. Even going back 20 years, my job was largely in the field. I would sometimes drive 300 miles in a day, on rare occasions I would log 500+, so I'm used to windshield time. I now have the ability to work from home up to twice a week, which is a nice break, because it allows me to be home when the kids get home and participate more in those things...plus I can work at my job longer because I don't need to spend that time driving.

So for those of you who commute to your job, how far each way is it? I know mine is on the extreme high end, but I'm curious what the group average is.

My job is 5 streets away. I would walk in good weather except I live on a really big hill, and don't want to walk up it at the end of the day.

For years we lived more than an hour away in city traffic. Then 3 years ago we moved to in from the 'burbs to our "dream home" in a mid-town neighbourhood. My morning drive now is 15 minutes, max. but to often takes me twice as long to get home due to traffic patterns, even though I take the same route. DH worked at home (and on the road) for ages but just recently started a new job which coincidentally is 2 minutes away from where I work. He's loving the short commute too!

Mine is 11 miles but takes anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes, depending on whether school is in session, whether it's snowbird season, whether there's an accident on the interstate, etc.

Like you, my commute is basically the only time I get to myself. I don't mind it so much in the morning because I'm not exactly eager to get to work, but it can be a bear in the evening when I'm just ready to be home with my family. I typically listen to podcasts on my commute.

14 in, 12 Home (different path "in" to avoid traffic). 18 minutes either way.

Did 56 miles (slight path variation in vs out) each way for many years. 60 minutes late at night, 90 each way on a "good" commute day. Rain, add 30 minutes. Slight snow, 3-3.5 hours each way. Heavier snows were actually better because traffic would be lighter. Made it home in 90 minutes with 11" on the ground & a shortcut that knocked the drive down to 48 miles.

DW commute used to be 6 miles each way, but she got transferred to a new school this year which is literally 1.4 miles from the house. We live in one of those mega sized self contained golf cart communities. The school is right at the end of the main community road. She could easily walk, ride a bike or use a golf cart (if we buy one). So we're a family of complete extreme opposite commutes.

I don't work, but DH only has a 1/2 hour commute (9 miles). At his last position it took over an hour (14 miles). We have a bit of traffic here...

It takes me about 3-4 minutes to drive to work depending on how slow the drivers in front of me are going l live and work in a small town and I absolutely love it. No traffic here! Been here three years now. My Dh drives about 10 minutes to get to his truck which he then drives for about 12 hours before driving back another 10 minutes home.

Well, I live about 11 miles away but I don't drive to work, I take the commuter rail. My total commute time is about an hour each way, that includes the walk to the train, train trip and the walk to work from the station. DH works about 4 miles away and it takes him about 20 minutes with school bus traffic.

My current commute is 14 miles each way. My previous job was .7 mile. I do miss that!

DH has a 6.5 mile commute. DD just graduated from college and her new job runs about 18 miles each way.

In the city I live in there can be a real difference between the miles and the time spent commuting. I now have, on a good day, a 6-7 minute commute. DH has around a 30-40 minute (just over 12 miles), although it can swell to an hour at times. Totally depends on traffic timing rather than distance.

13 miles each way. 15 minutes drive....which is usually a breeze at 2:45 am, except here in California they do freeway work overnight now. I have a choice of 3 freeways to get to work, and at one point 2 years ago ALL 3 were closed at 2:45 am due to construction. I live 3 miles from the freeway, THAT part takes as much time as the 10 miles I drive on the freeway. Also have 6 traffic lights between my freeway exit and my office which are on timers, not sensors. So that can add 5 minutes to my commute if I hit the timing wrong. Always tempted to run them because NOBODY else is out.

Mine is around 15 miles, it takes me about 30 min. We live out in the country and I work in a college town so it takes a little less time when school isn't in session. I'm getting ready to go virtual and cutting my hours down but I'll still have to make the trip into the office at least once a week to pick up mail and go to the bank.

My commute is from my bedroom to my family room, about 15 steps. I'm a freelance book editor and I work from home. But not in my pajamas - I do get dressed.

I am about 7 miles - it takes 15 - 20 minutes depending on traffic. We take a bypass road through the city, which eases some pain...still a good amount of traffic on it, but no stoplights/signs for the majority of it, so it flows pretty good.
