How far do your kids travel to school?

Currently my DD has a 3 block walk to middle school and will have about a one-mile trek to high school (public transportation is an option). That's IF we stay here (NOT!). I'm hoping to move out of this school district, to a suburban district, before the start of school for 2004-05 school year.

Growing up, I lived in a rural area and took a bus 10 miles one way to junior & senior high school in the suburbs of the small city where we now live. I'm reseaching a new location where my company plans to expand next year, and it seems the nearest middle school is 25 miles away!

I'm wondering how far some kids have to ride a bus to go to school.

edit: I stand corrected. It looks like there is a middle school within 20 minutes - Microsoft Streets and Trips 2001 does not contain that data, I found it through a web search of the town's Yellow Pages.

Our elementary school is 1 mile from our house. We have a bus which picks DS up at the end of our street, which is probably under a 1 minute walk from our house.

i drive to my school which is about 15-20 minutes (we live in the country and my school is in town) and when i had to ride the bus it picked me up at 6:30 am and i got to school around 7:50. it sucked but now i get to sleep in longer and can leave when i am ready to!! :teeth: cars are a wonderful thing.

I don't have kids yet, but this is what I travelled.
Elem. school: 2 blocks
Middle school: just under 1 mile (alternated between biking and walking, sometimes getting a ride)
High School: about 2 miles (usually got a ride in the morning, rode the bus home)
College: About 400 miles. (usually fly for short vacations, drive for anything longer than a week)

Well......Nick has the reeaallyy loooong walk from his bedroom to the kitchen:o :p :teeth:

If he attended the local elem. school his bus ride would be at least 15 min depending on where this pick up is. It takes that long for me to drive there. I timed it one morning. I'm not sure about middle school because I can't remember which one he would attend. High School is at least 15-20min away on a good day. In fact he would have to pass another HS to get to the one he would be assigned too:rolleyes:
The private school he used to attend is 10-15 min away on a good day.
Of course now that the orange and white round barrel gardens are growing and sprouting up everywhere that will add extra time to everything.

So glad I don't have that commute any longer!!::yes::

DS's HS is just under 3 miles away and, he carpools with another family. DD's school is also about 3 miles away and, I take her.

Everyday...it is about a 5-7 minute walk from the dorm to class (very small campus)

In general it is a 20 hour drive from home to school, it is an all day flying day.

Elementry school is just under 1/2 mile, the bus takes about 5 minutes to get her there. Jr high is about a mile, maybe a 8 minute bus ride with all the other stops and high school is 1- 1/2 miles...about a 10 minute ride with all the stops.

It's either 8 miles or 9 miles to my kids' school. We get there in 10-12 minutes. When I went to school, it was about an 18 mile trip, but on the bus, it took us about an hour and a half to get to school, and over 2 hours to get home from school.

If they went to public school, our kids would have about a 10 minute ride (1.5 miles away). But since they go to school in VA, it is a little over 10 miles away, about a 30 minute bus ride.

My kids walk to their high school - 1.25 miles away.

My DS goes to his elementary school off a day care waiver (i.e. he goes to the school which is serviced by his day care, instead of our house). We live about 10 miles from the day care (which is where we work), and the school is about 3 miles away. He has about a 5-10 minute bus ride.

DD's middle school is about 5 minutes (maybe 3 miles) from our house. We actually pass it on our way to work. Since she comes to daycare first, her bus ride is usually about 35-40 minutes (she's the first stop on the bus) in the morning, and about 15 in the afternoons.

The elementary school I went to is the closest school to my house. My mom would always drive me and it took about 2 minutes to get there.

My middle school was the farthest school from me and I always took the bus there. It usually took about 15 minutes to get there.

In high school I could have taken the bus, but I prefered to go with my friend who lives a block away. It took a little less than 10 minutes to get to school.

Now I'm in college and it takes me between 20-25 minutes to get to school everyday.

We live five short blocks from our elementary school, but our district contains 5 small rural communities, each with its own elementary school, and for some reason that no one has ever been able to explain to me, the Kindergarteners are all bused to one location (4 miles - 20 min.- for us, farther for some of the other towns). Now the school board has decided to close 2 of the other elementary schools due to declining registration and create grade centers at the remaining 3 schools where all the towns will be bussed. Now my DD will be bussed to a school 8 miles away for 2 years instead of being able to walk to school next year. :( Sometime during the next 6 years she will get to go the school here in town for 2 years, but will be bussed out for 4 years.

Elementary school - I live about 2 blocks away from my elementary school, so it was just a short 5 minute walk every day.
Middle school - is less then 2 miles away. Bus ride was about 10 minutes each way.
High School- If I had gone to public high school, I would have to walk about a quarter of a mile. But I go to a Catholic school now, and it is about 8 miles away. 15-20 minute drive on a good day, but my bus route is an hour long each way! Some days it's even longer in the mornings because of traffic. :earseek:

preschool for DD's, just turned 5, is less then 5 min straight down the rd from our house and the daycare. There are only 2 buses for that age for the entire township so they spend about 40 min on the bus. My DS, 5th gr, spends almost an hr on the bus. We don't live in a housing development and the sends the non-development buses all over the township.

My DD's school is a rural school and we live in town, but we live on the west edge which is closest to the school. It's only 3 miles and we drive her out there and pick her up. She's a freshman and taking drivers ed, so next year I'm hoping she will drive.
