How far ahead do you plan?

We typically go around the same times every year, so I have the tentative dates on my calendar and make reservations at 11 months. By the time 7 months rolls around, our trips mostly set so I can modify our dates and resorts.

I just started using spreadsheets so I'm still trying to figure out how to use them.

We generally have a chat about every 6 months to plan for the next 11 month window. I usually have to tie my planning allergic husband to a chair and threaten to tase him so we keep it short and general. He’s ok with me picking specifics. Occasionally I’ll book a placeholder reservation just in case we’re undecided about a busy time like Thanksgiving, then will modify it later.

Yep, It’s super helpful, but it’s more designed to help allocate your points for the year rather than split stays in one trip.
I made a few suggestions that might help, but the changes might also ruin the purpose of the site the way it works right now… but yes very helpful to see it all in one place.
I had that same thought earlier ...considering 1 night in a studio and 5 nights in a 1BD to save a bit on points. It would be nice to see this represented in one view on this site, agree with your feedback!

I feel like that is the way to do it, book something you might want to do then just keep modifying. Like right now I’m planning on booking Halloween, but depending on how that works out, I may modify to November and then maybe again to Dec, and if all else fails modify to Jan when it’s the cheapest and the coolest weather. :)
Is there any down side to that? (besides not being able to go back once you let go of possibly hard to get rooms)

I feel like sometimes it's the only way to do it. Southwest doesn't usually have their flight schedules out that far so I guess as best as I can. This year I modified a Sat-Sat trip to Sun-Sun to accommodate cheaper fares.

Next year, we know we want to go in the fall but can't nail down dates. I'm probably going to just book something while we hem and haw particulars.

I book our trips 11 months in advance most of the time and then modify if I can at 7 months. I am a creature of habit too but also recently retired so am switching up our typical weeks to try some slightly different times. But still plan to book 11 months out to do so.

When looking at your points...how far ahead do you tentatively "plan" your trips?

I honestly feel like this would be easier if A) we had a LOT of points and B) we went more often. (Two things that won't be happening at this point.)

We plan to go to WDW 2 years in a row and then skip a year. And then likely continue that pattern for a while. For DLR, we plan at least once every 18 months. But sometimes trips may be only 6 months apart. Sometimes 12 months. It just depends. And because of that, it's making my head explode a bit trying to plan things out so that we don't end up short one year or have too many extra.

So I've basically written out different options/ideas from now until about 2031. But I KNOW it will all change so it's probably pointless. But it helps my anxiety to have some ideas on paper anyway. Though I'm kind of running into a "too many points" situation some years with our BRV points.

Anyway....do you guys just plan a year at a time? Do you think ahead a few years? Or are you a completely normal person who just flies by the seat of their pants? 🤣
One of the nice things about DVC is if you are 60+ days out, there's no penalty for changes or cancelations. That has allowed us to speculatively book holidays at the 11 month mark then we can modify or cancel as the dates get closer.

Need to be cognizant of 60-days and banking deadlines.

We plan at least two years out for the time and accommodations. So, our January 2025 trip was planned in 2023, and our March 2026 trip was planned this year (2024). It's all about point and AP management for us. We do one trip a year, for an extended period (10-12 days). Our current AP's expire in February 2025, and we aren't renewing them. The March 2026 trip will begin a new AP purchase, and we'll get a February 2027 trip into that AP period. February 2024's trip wiped out our banked points. January 2025 will leave us with points to bank. March 2026 will use up those banked points. RInse and repeat.

About a year out. As long as I have a decent idea what we are doing around 11 months out so I can consider reservations, that's good enough for me. I'm usually pretty flexible for changes up to 7 months out.

Less and less, which is directly tied to Disney's trend of making the basic experience irrelevant while charging hundreds of dollars for "extras." I used to hand Disney a blank check, confident that my expenditures would directly result in a better experience. Now their offerings are under a microscope, and my game is, "Let's see how little extra I can give them."

The first 3 decades, I would plan 2 months before my use year so I would be ready if we wanted an 11 mos. choice. When I quadrupled the points, I stopped planning unless it was for a holiday or I had guests coming. If it's just me or a few select friends that travel there with me often, I don't plan anything anymore.
If it's friends with children or friends that have never been, then I plan from the minute I know they are wanting to come.

I love spreadsheets. I have three that I use, a yearly overall view of the various vacations forcasted out to 2049, a monthly look at the most current reservation with dining/plans and then a tabulation of each contract points with usage banking/borrowing. Mostly book a home resort at 11 months and then change if another resort looks promising (and then add on there if DH approves)
I keep a master spreadsheet, too. Four use years, multiple contacts for each. Sadly, unlike the early years when I would obsessively track each point, I know sometimes forget to update the spreadsheet. My goal is to go to the site and reconcile quarterly. It's a goal not always attained.

Would be amazing if Disney supplied a way to track, & plan 2 years in advance, then you could just hit "activate" or "make live" when the 11 month window opened (or 7month).

Actually, it's even better than that - there are no penalties until you're at 30 days or less from checkin when you cancel (or make changes that use fewer points than the original reservation did). The only other thing that can cause problems is if you're past the banking deadline for any points that are freed up by canceling.

Always far enough in advance to use our 11 month booking window.

I've had trips sketched out sort of as goals two or three years in advance and made notes on my spreadsheet of how many points they might take, so that I could make sure we'd have enough points for them. Currently I'm thinking about 2026, maybe a trip to DLR for Disneyland's 60th anniversary, or maybe some splurge time at WDW in a CCV cabin before or after a cruise out of Port Canaveral. We'll see!

Depends on the Disney location for us as East Coasters:
DLR-11 months out (rented VGC points)
WDW-7 months out
HHI- 11 months out (home resort)

Our trips are tentatively planned through 2029. We only go to HHI now and always in the fall. We usually do solo trips, but this year I paid cash for some of our nights so we could bank points into next year for a family trip. We have non-DVC trips planned as well through 2029 as we are trying to get to all 50 states and should be able to accomplish that by then. After 2029 (or maybe before), we are hoping to start going twice a year and take future grandkids every year as well. I'll have to have more points at that point! Hopefully, HHI resale contracts are super low by then!

You guys are so high tech with your spreadsheets and formulas and stuff. I'm over here just penciling things out, basically. (Though I am using my Kindle Scribe...ha!)
I'm old school and still use a notebook and pen! I love writing things out! Pages and pages of planning!

I plan in my head a year or 2 out and then book as soon as I'm able too. Our travel plans are changing as our kids are getting older (college and high school- they are still big Disney fans) We have Christmas 2024, summer 2025 and Fall 2025 planned. Disney Break and bank points in 2026 since dd will be studying abroad and we will visit her. 2027 dd wants to go to Disney for spring break with friends so will gift some nights for that and tentatively trying to get to Aulani to celebrate college and high school graduations.
