I've only rented a car once before but it stayed in the WL parking lot except to go to Universal and then to the airport.
For my upcoming trip I'd like to have meals at other resorts, we will be staying at the Poly. How is easy is it to get to the AKL, WL and the YC/BC?

It is easy, I do it often. BUT, you really have to learn the Disney signage. I have taken the wrong roads often there, and never, ever get mixed up elsewhere. You have to understand that the signs lead to the park areas, MK, MGM, Epcot, etc), then when closer to the park, the resorts. Such as, if you were wanting to go to the Poly, you follow the signage towards MK, even though you are not rerally going to the park. As you get closer to MK, the signs will start splitting off to the appropriate resort roads.

Even though I have gotten twisted around a bit, just pull into a park entrance and tell the CM where you are trying to get, they are so very helpful.

That's so funny! A few years ago, I was staying at one of the DtD properties and had a rental car. Three days in a row I drove to various parks (AK, MK) and hotels (AKL) and on my way back encountered the same intersection each night. The sign said "Whatever" road, next left.
Three nights in a row I took the 'next' left and got lost - but not the same next left, and not lost the same way each time! I remember the second night thinking, well, maybe the sign means the next left AFTER the sign or some foolishness.
Anyway, night one I ended up pulling in to OKW.
Night two I ended up driving ALLL the way around the OKW/SSR/Northern Florida section of Disney.
Night three I ended up heading east on I-4 - remember, all from the same starting point and all from trying to take the same 'next left'.

Eventually, I discovered from talking to a CM - how do I explain this? - there was a Cast Member road in there somewhere that Disney didn't COUNT in its signage!

I agree--it's very easy, provided you take your time. When a sign says "next right" it could mean the VERY next right. Which is a problem when the sign is AFTER the road you are to take!! Or--it could mean the next right AFTER an access road.
BUt by and large it really isn't a problem and like us, I believe you'll be glad to have a car to go resort to resort. We always drive when at WDW and find it very convenient.

We had no difficulties at all...but we also had an excellent map of the entire property that clearly showed all the resorts and parks, so even if we didn't see the signs we could tell which turns we needed to make.

The map came in one of the guidebooks I had...Frommer's Disney Guide, I believe.

I think its a peice of cake! Parks, hotels, etc. are all clearly marked. Other than my home, it is one place I feel comfortable driving because of all the signage! :earsgirl:
Just saw Alamo has there minivans for only $1 more than a midsize. Discount codes through BJS, Walmart, Costco, etc. 1 wk rental was about $150 for a van.

I was able to get a mid size suv for $139.00 including tax, it's a pretty good deal.
Since this is my husband's first trip ever I'd really like to do a few dinners that I would not have done by myself or going with my children.
If I get lost once or twice, no big deal, I'm on vacation I'm not going to be in a big rush.
I would like to find a good map of the roads on the property, the next time I'm a the book store I'll check out Frommers.

The one thing I think is strange is that a lot of the roads are not marked with the names of the streets. I guess they want you to just follow the signs for parks or resorts? I also always have a car either drive down or rent one. I love the convenience.
