So In all the years that I have gone I have never been to a rope drop! What time should we get there for rope drop?

I normally aim to be AT the turnstiles 45 minutes prior to opening.

I'm hardcore like that, though. To be "near the front" I'd say you'd want to arrive no later than 30 minutes prior. To be "in the middle" 20 minutes early would do.

For MK we got there just a few minutes before the park opened. The characters come in on the train so there really isn't a bad place to stand.

It really depends upon which park you are talking about and what you want to do...

For MK, Epcot or AK 10-15 minutes before RD is fine, for the TSM dash at HS 45 minutes before RD is the latest you want to be there.

I'm going to stick with 30-45 minutes before posted opening time at all of the theme parks.

That way, when they do open the gates early, you won't be standing behind quite as many other guests who arrived earlier than you.

It also greatly depends on the general crowd level on the dates that you go.

In the "off season," (whenever that is, anymore) you can have a bit less urgency to get there "early" than when the place is flat-out overrun.
