How DVC Made Timeshares even worse

The author basically argues that Disney emotionally manipulates everyone, and reinforces that this is a terrible investment. I would argue most vacations are financially a terrible investment, but that's not the point.

He often is talking about Disney and then sometimes talks about timeshares generally. Often with tremendous ambiguity.

The other point is that Disney is too expensive in general, well who knows.... The podcast is quite lousy.

Vacations aren’t an investment they are an expense.
Feels like many believe anything over 5k is an “investment “.
Nope, just a big expense.

Many people seem to use the word "investment" in a metaphorical sense, along the lines of "investment in leisure time." It's meant to express one's long term commitment to improving family relations, taking a break for mental health purposes, etc. I don't think many people are intentionally trying to equate their timeshare to a mutual fund.

At the same time, DVC does have a tangible long-term value. When you spend $5000 on a hotel room or cruise ship cabin, there's nothing left at the end of the trip. That is an expense. With DVC, even after used 5, 10, 20 times, there's still value remaining. There are many instances where the present value exceeds what was originally paid. Some people do expressly purchase points for investment purposes, usually with the idea of renting or because they feel a low-cost contract can be flipped for a profit when the market improves.

A DVC timeshare shouldn't be confused with stocks or money markets. But neither "investment" nor "expense" seems to accurately encompass all of the intents and emotions which may lie behind the purchase.

Can't listen anymore - so misleading, and some actual un-truths in there. But look - we're talking about it, aren't we?! Mission accomplished for the podcast!

All I know is we never considered a timeshare until DVC. And we sat through a couple presentations 'back in the day'. The days of being locked in to the same resort for the same week every year didn't work for us. We've never regretted our DVC purchase, so that's all that really matters to us.......... But I don't have a podcast.......

I scanned the comments - apparently the podcasters said that DVC owners can’t get rid of their contracts and are giving them away for free when they can’t use their points. So - I’m not wasting time or brain space on this podcast. That’s patently false.
Wait, in the one in a billion chance this is true.

I would like to offer my DVC Points disposal services to anyone that does not want their points and feels they need to give them away….

I have deeds, I will pay the recording fees.

All these “deprate” DVC owners need to do is message me and I’ll take care of the rest….

Dipping with sarcasm ….

Okay I just finished this and I HAD to come back to mention that one of the people on this podcast was actually recommending people to do a Six Flags vacation over Disney and/or spending money on DVC. I mean, come on LOL

Is this the line we stand in for people giving away their DVC contracts?

Interesting hypothetical, but of course, you would never see the deeds as they would certainly be taken in ROFR. The ROFR lady may be sleeping, but she's not dead.

If someone was giving it away, it would be considered a gratuitous transfer and so far, DVD has always let those go through...

ROFR only applies if you sell...which means money changing hands

I haven't watched, but I have said before that the John Oliver Last Week Tonight segment on Timeshares was amazing and everyone should watch it even if it isn't necessarily related to DVC.

This is not completely wrong. There are a lot of possible vacations one can take. Many of them are much less expensive. Most of them are more relaxing. All of them can serve as the setting in which great memories are made. This isn't always a popular opinion on DIS, where the prevailing sentiment is often Only Disney, All The Time.

In particular, I love me a good amusement park, and I've had plenty of fun at some Six Flags parks. My favorite is probably Fiesta Texas. It's built into an old rock quarry, has a good lineup of attractions with some lightly themed areas, and makes spectacular use of the rock wall in several different coasters.

That doesn't mean DVC is a bad idea. But, as a former Hyatt salesman put it: "It's a TOY. You are buying a TOY. Treat it like a TOY." If that's the toy you want, and you can afford it, why not?
