Hi all, I have been going ood with a few slip ups but nothng major. I have been faithfully exercising and have put the scale addiction behind me. However, I think that perhaps because I didnt weigh myself for so long, this is how I gained back some weight. ANYWHO........... its been about a month since I have been back on track, I have been weighing in every thursday at the gym with the exception of last thursday being that tom had visited.
Saturday I weighed 159.4 monday, 162 and now today 164! I am losing my mind. this is enough to make me throw it all in! How frustraing is that?

Has thins ever happened to any of you? I mean, I have noticed in the past that I lose weight in bulk from one day to the next but gaining almost 5 ponds in a matter of 3 days is crazy! I am going to load up on exercising big time. My slips have not been major either. In the past I tended to really over do it when I slip up, I have gotten that under control. FOr instance I took the kids to a water park today and eat a LC lunch, before we left, I bought them ice cream so I got myself one to...... I felt a little bad but it was a treat and I didn't think ahhhhhh! I screwed up already may as well do it up. I am so upset about this, I have been working out so hard and not skipping any exercise......
any advice?

You might be gaining muscle and therefore the added weight. Also, if it is close to TOM, you may be retaining water. Use a tape measure to take your measurements. You can do this once a week or every other. Many times, you will lose inches as you develop lean muscle, but not weight. Also use your clothes as a means of measuring success. Are they loser, did you go down in size, etc.

Don't give up. It takes time, but the scale is not the only measure of success. ::MickeyMo ::MickeyMo

I would bet that you are just retaining more fluid than normal! I am the queen at retaining fluid and that sort of thing happens to me, so I know how frustrating it can be  I can now usually tell by checking me legs and ankles if I am going to lose weight or not. Do you ankles or fingers look puffy? I am sure if you keep on going you will have a big whoosh in the next few days! :teeth:

Good luck renee

Bob Greene (Oprah's trainer) actually writes about this in his latest fitness book. As you exercise more, your body holds water initially which he attributes to glycogen which is stored as you build muscle.

I find that it is hard to lose weight during the summer because of the heat. I believe that you retain more water during the summer.

I have found that once I upped my water intake, I began to lose weight. If I don't drink at least 70 ounces of water in a day I don't lose as well. Also I have gotten to a point where I write everything down. That way I know if I can have an ice cream cone as a treat and if I do what else I ate that day that might have knocked me off. Usually an ice cream cone isn't going to through your weight into a tailspin so there must be something else.

Also if you are really forcing the exercise, you also need to force the water. If you don't your body will tend to retain more to try to keep it hydrated. On days I work out I drink at least 100 ounces of water because I sweat so bad. One day I didn't and I had a gain the next day.

Good luck. I know from experience it's frustrating.

I feel your pain! When TOM comes around for me, I can gain up to 5 lbs in a couple days. I just stick to eating healthy and not snacking and eventually the weight goes away. I know mine is water retention because my fingers swell up like little sausages and also my ankles get fat and my legs get jiggly. There is no solution that I have found besides letting mother nature do her thing and eventually the weight will go off. You do have to drink lots of water to get rid of water, so be sure you drink at LEAST 64 oz a day! Good luck and whatever you do, don't give up!

This is what frrustrates me also. I know that I am not eating enought to actually be gaining weight, yet the scale moves up instead of down. I have been exercising for 2 months now and have not lost any weight. My cothes seem better, but it is very discouraging. I don't know what to do.

Throw away that scale! You are gaining weight because you are adding muscle - simple as that. The more muscle you have, the more fat you will burn. Your body composition will change (it is changing).

Please don't get discouraged, any of you. It's a natural progression to first lose weight, then gain it. Stick with it and the pounds will really drop off. Use your clothes to measure your progress, not your scale. Remember that these things don't happen overnight...you didn't put the weight on overnight...don't expect it to come off that way!

Also, please remember if you are sweating profusely while exercising (which is a good thing - you should be sweating)...drink water, but not excessively. Water will flush out the sodium from your body which is necessary (especially for women). There have been several women marathon runners who have died recently because they drank too much water!! Drink a sports drink instead which will replace sodium as well as water.

well, not as bad as I thought.............
I weighed in today at the gym and on monday I was 162 then yesterday, 164 which is what promted me to write this thread so today I was back at 162.
I wont weigh in till next thursday! PROMISE............
as far as the scale , I really thought I got it out of my system.......
I mean I didnt weigh myself for so long and was using my clothes as my measuring tool but I really do believe that becuase I didt weigh myself, I lost track and just gained the weight back.........
anyway, Ill stick to once a week!
I am off to post a new thread! thanks all

Renee! Do NOT throw in the towel! You have made such wonderful progress and it would be such a shame to throw it all away! I am so jealous of you and dream of the day when I can be at your weight. (Honestly, I think the last time I was there was about 6 years or so ago). Please, please, please do not give up! :)

Don't give up but stop weighing yourself so often. That can be discouraging.

You're doing great. Intellectually, I'm sure that you realize that you haven't eaten enough food to cause that type of "real gain", right?

Scales weigh a lot of things so don't take them so seriously.

For example, I weighed myself Friday. I weighed myself Tuesday before working out and I was a pound and a half lighter. I weighed myself after working out and I was a four pounds heavier! How did I lost 1.5 lbs in 4 days and gain 5.5 pounds back in 45 minutes?

I didn't.

Either there was something wrong with the scale, or I was retaining fluid, or my muscles were swollen, or something was going on.

I agree with the advice to measure, to rely on other means of assessment other than just the scale. I need to apply this advice to because I weigh myself twice a day when I work out. (works out to 8 times a week) No scale at home because I get too obsessed. ( I struggled with an ED in high school)

Curves is good for me because it measures body fat, too. Seeing my body fat percentage get lower, even if my weight isn't moving so fast is a great motivator.

Good luck!

Try measuring in inches--if your inches are still going down...then that will help confirm "toning" which the scale doesn't read as pounds or ounces off.

I thought you were asking along the lines of where on the body.

I lose weight slowly...and it comes off of chest and arms first......then starting with my knees (no fat below the knees--wish the rest of my body was that way!!!) and at the waist....it gets skinnier.....so the weight comes from the knees..then the lower thigh......the waist...then the upper hip and upper abdomen...and it stalls at the drumstick portion of my though and middle hip.

So always a slow weight loss at first--b/c the places that lose first don't have much to lose. when I say it is all in my caboose...that would be why---b/c it holds onto the fat for dear life!
