How does tipping work

We booked our package with prepaid gratuities, but how do I know how much each CM is getting? We've been on different cruise lines where we get the envelopes at the end, and just put our money in them. So I'm really confused as to how this is going to work. Thanks! :confused3

Each tipped position will get the recommended amounts posted on the DCL website based on the length of your cruise. You will still get envelopes in your room but you will also get vouchers for each of the tipped positions that you put in the envelopes.....you can add extra cash to them if you choose.

We have cruised a few times with prepaid gratutities and that is how it worked.

CMs in the clubs cannot receive cash tips. You can provide Wallmart or Target gift cards or phone cards but cash tips go to group parties or events.

Another great gift card is for Books a Million. Our DD worked at the BAM on Merrit Island and said that the CM's were bussed in when they reached port on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The BAM was super busy on those days and it was all CM's from the ships.

Wow the person who started this thread was really smart, nice job happy lawyer :rotfl: :rotfl:

We were not able to get early seating for our upcoming three-night cruise (our 3 yr old is in bed by 8 pm). As a result we're just planning to have meals at the buffet. Am I correct ot assume that we still tip the Dining Room Server, Dining Room Asst. Server and Dining Room Head Server as well as our Stateroom Host/Hostess? I don't want to short-change anyone.

Thanks!

that is a tough one , I would say " NO". Tips are for a service rendered, since you have not recieved any service no tip is forthcoming.
But I betcha you will get to switch to early seating once you get on board.

Since all the servers share working the buffet and other eating areas around the ship (and breakfast and lunch), the tip you pay to your assigned servers covers those services. If you don't tip your assigned servers, they will be short money from the trip unless you give up your table altogether. So I would tip the assigned servers for the service I received at the buffet and around the ship and for breakfast and lunch.

Did we ever figure out how much is appropriate to tip Spa attendants. We have a rasul treatment scheduled. Do I need to plan on tipping for that?

Thanks

thank you for this post, the info is great, I have 2 questions.

1-do you tip the stateroom hostess/host daily or at the end

2-do you tip breakfast or lunch servers , if they are not your regular servers don't they lose out. ok just reread the post a few above mine, so the only tips the servers get are from their regular dining people at night, Right?TIA

You tip at the end of the cruise, although if you want to give them something during the cruise you're welcome to. And yes you just tip your dinner servers, even though they likely won't be the ones serving you at other meals the assumption is that the tips they get cover all meals.

Remember, you can still try to trade for early seating the day you board the ship -- get there ASAP boarding day and head to the lounge where they handle those arrangements.
If you still don't get early seating, may I suggest that you try eating in your cabin at least once? It is the same food from the main dining rooms, and we think it is better than the buffet. They bring everything to you, and the food and desserts are great. You should still do a bare minimum tip unless you really didn't get assigned a table...as someone else said, these people work all over the ship day and night, and they REALLY get paid very poorly without those tips.
While Stateroom Host/Hostess receives their tip at the end, if you have anything special during the Cruise, then a few dollars can be given ahead of time also. International Phone Cards are always a great idea as a bonus tip also. Happy sailing!

I don't know why but I still feel so confused over tipping. So as I understand it, Disney will give you envelopes and a suggested tipping amount and then it is up to you whether to give the suggested amount or more based on service received. Then you can either do cash or charge it to your room and enclose a slip in the envelope. I know that we'll see the dining room server and stateroom host/hostess but what about the assistant and head server? Will we see them enough to give them an envelope or can we leave their envelopes with Guest services? We're going for the first time in late September and I'm just trying to get my head around these details.

thanks much!

You see the assistant server every night. He/she delivers your drinks and helps the server.

On our cruise the head server came around to all the tables each night to check everything was ok. We gave him our envelope on the last night, same as the others.

As a server myself, of course I will tip good. Just chalk it up to part of taking a cruise.

Is this a cash envelope, so you would leave the tips in cash on your final night of the cruise in the envelope? Is it the same for the maid, room service, etc?

We charged our tips to our account. We filled out a form that had the servers/stateroom host's names on it and how much we were paying each of them. We got a receipt that was put into each of their envelopes. Not sure if you can put cash in - I guess you probably can.

The stateroom host is given an envelope as well. Give it to them on the last night as well.

You give room service the tip in cash when they deliver your food.

So, this is all charged to the credit card that you give DCL to use while on board the ship? Who else would you need to tip with cash besides room service and how much should you tip room service? Is it a must every time?

Yes, on the credit card. You can give cash to Guest Services to put onto your stateroom account if you want to though.

Not sure about room service. I have read that people tip $1-$2 for something small. More if you order a lot. You have to tip each time you use them - I guess you might get a different person each time.

Don't think there are any other cash tips. The tips for the spa, drinks etc can be charged to your room - you sign a slip where you put the amount for the tip.

Hope that helps:)
