"why does this work?"

select a 3 digit number (the first # must be larger than the first
301

reverse it and subtract
-103 (=198)

now reverse and add that number +891

Your answer is always: 1089

The first # must be larger than the first????

I don't think it does work. I tried it with 403, 524 and 807, and none of them came out to 1089. Is there more to the 'instructions" than what you said? (I assumed you meant to say that the first digit must be larger than the third, since 301 was your example.)

i think you did something wrong when you were posted. you skipped some steps or something because the directions don't make sense. check the directions again and try reposting.

Any number I tried it with worked if I did the following

I believe the formula is this:

Pick a 3 digit number where the first digit is larger than the last. I am pretty sure the last number cannot be a zero. Non of the numbers I tried with the one's place equaling zero worked

654

Subtract the reversal of that number

654 - 465 = 198

Reverse that answer 891 and add it back to the answer before reversal

891 + 198 = 1089
