How does the park prevent Cryptosporidiosis

Not sure what they can do, since your typical pool chemicals seem to not always kill it.

Guess anyones best bet is to not drink the pool water, and practice good hygiene. Scary stuff.

Can chlorine dioxide be used to disinfect swimming pools?

For swimming pool disinfection the combination of chlorine (Cl2) and chlorine dioxide (ClO2) can be applied. Chlorine dioxide is added to the water. Chlorine is already present in the water as hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and hypochlorite ions (OCl-). Chlorine dioxide breaks down substances, such as phenols. The advantages of chlorine dioxide are that it can be used at low concentrations to disinfect water, that it hardly reacts with organic matter, and that little disinfection byproducts are formed.

How much chlorine dioxide should be dosed?
The amount of disinfectant required needs to be determined first. This amount can be determined by adding disinfectant to the water and measuring the amount that remains after a defined contact time. The amount of chlorine dioxide that is dosed depends upon the contact time, the pH, the temperature and the amount of pollution that is present in the water.

I learned a lot in this search! Thank-you

I was reading up too! LOL It said that most pool chemicals can't kill it because the parasite has a hard outter "shell". Which is why they pretty much say to not drink the pool water, and take hygiene measures. I wonder how common this really is though.

Giardia - is from the woodland areas where people think it is safe to drink the water because it is running swiftly over rocks, but there is a dead animal up stream contaminating the water badly causing giardia the bug, to making you very sick. Get to the Doctor before becoming dehydrated or you will be even sicker.

Not sure what prompted the question, but giardia is actually carried in the guts of humans and animals...you don't need a dead animal, just poor hygiene around water. Where we are from, it was spread by the growth of tourists into back country, who didn't dispose of their waste correctly. From there it gets into the water supply, and then spread through animals and then you have it forever.

As for crypto..again, hygiene is the problem (watch those toddler pools!) That's why pools close when there is an 'accident' or request that you don't swim if you have had diarrohea recently. So it can be prevented if we all take responsibility.

Having said that, I would try to avoid being over anxious about it. There was a recent post on the DW boards where people reported all kinds of hygiene manouevres to avoid getting sick, including bagging the remote control (which I have got to say I think is a long shot). I think commonsense (like not drinking pool water eewww) is the best preventative approach.

If the OP is from AZ, there has been an outbreak of crypto in public pools around the metro area causing pool closures.

I just please ask parents to be aware of their younguns in the pool and please don't let them swim if they have had diarrea recently. Those swim diapers really do not hold anything in, they just don't absorb the water like regular diapers.

And, just as if you were going to Mexico: "Dont Drink the Water."

FYI it's coccidioides immitis that is the fungal infection found in the soil.
