How does Space Mountain compare to the other 2 MK mountains?

OK, I admit it - I'm a coaster wimp! :guilty:

On my last trip to WDW I rode the two mountains (Splash and Big Thunder), and I want to know how Space Mountain compares to them. Here's my basic feelings: I'd much rather ride Splash Mountain than Big Thunder. BTMR gave me the gut-out-your-mouth feeling. I know there's not any big drops in BTM but the 4 drops in SM go by so quickly (especially the big one!) and the other parts are so tame that I'd probably ride that 10x before BTM again.

I LOVE Test Track, so speed doesn't bother me. Just the plunging downwards, but I can handle a few big ones better than lots of medium ones. (Anything Maelstrom or POC sized I'm fine with.)

Darkness doesn't bother me that much, but if the whole ride is dark I will get freaked out. (I need light every once in a while.)

Do you think SM is too scary for me? I don't want to drag the kids on and be a total wimp in front of them.... :rotfl:

Space Mountain is a mini roller coaster...IMO the hills and drops are more significant that BTMR and the entire thing is in the dark (although if your eyes are adjusted to the dark and if you're near the front you'll be able to see what's coming.) Based on what you said (prefer a large drop vs. a bunch of medium ones), I don't think you'd like Space Mountain.

One suggestion....ride TomorrowLand Transit Authority....it goes through Space Mountain and will give you a good opportunity to see it.

Have fun!

Not to sound immodest, but I have consider myself a Space Mountain expert. I would love to know how many times I've ridden it! OK, I'm a Space Mountain junkee.

The ride is completely in the dark. It doesn't have any huge dips (as you can tell by the size of the building's exterior.) The thrill is in the numerous small dips and turns that come at you without warning. I've seen the interior of Space Mountain with its lights on, and it is an amazingly compact roller coaster track, especially considering that there are 2 separate tracks!

I would recommend that you ride Tomorrowland Transit Authority (TTA aka Peoplemover) which provides a visit inside Space Mountain and you can judge the darkness factor yourself.

Tip: At night, it isn't quite as dark inside...strange!

Hope this helps! It's my favorite ride, but it's not for everyone.

Enjoy!

That's all I've seen of SM lol...I love TTA. I always ride it waiting for FP return times for SRS. :cool1:

It seems like there's lots of random "neon" lighting that wouldn't be too dark. Is it like this for the whole ride?

Thanks!

How long is the ride? Is it longer than the other two mountain rides? I guess if it's not very long it's worth trying...

Hmm, never thought about how long it lasts. The first part is typical coaster, you go up a hill quite slowly. Then all heck breaks loose and off you go. Probably, the action part of the coaster is 2 minutes, I'm guessing. I bet it would seem much longer if you were freaking out.

Of course, it's not long enough for me! Hello, my name is Kerri and I'm a Space Mountain addict.

Personally, I think Space Mount. is bumpier than BTMR but as for the drops, it's comparable.

And you call yourself an expert! :rotfl: :teeth:

Just kidding :goodvibes

i think the ride is just over 2 minutes long. its pretty short.

i guess its more "thrilling" than BTMR... but even as a thrill-seeker, i love BTMR more. maybe because of the fact that each time you come out of a cave it seems like your gonna smack your head on the cieling lol now THATS scary!

The Unofficial Guide lists the duration of Space Mountain as "almost 3 minutes," Splash Mountain as "about 10 minutes," and BTMR as "almost 3 1/2 minutes." Of course, keep in mind that most of that time on Splash Mountain is spent taking in the scenery, not screaming and hanging on tight.

The thing about Space Mountain is the dark. You can't see the drops to prepare for them, so it's a little more intense. No more drops than SM, though. I loved them both!!!

I LOVE Splash, LOVE BTM, and only tolerate Space. I consider it all in the dark, except for the first few seconds in the tunnel with the neon lights. I've never felt like there were really any significant drops, not like the big one on Splash, just lots of little ones. Much more turns and twists, and definitely more jerky. That's why I don't rate it nearly as high. My DD (14) and I did discover last trip that the front car is significantly less jerky than the rear one, so if I do ride it again I'll ask for the front or skip it completely. I could never quite figure out why sometimes I enjoyed it and sometimes got off and thought "I'll never ride this again," but this time rode it both ways and it really changed the whole experience.

I think you should try it - your eyes will adjust to the dark and you can actually see some of the track so if the dark bothers you that should help.

Do you ever experience motion sickness? I rode Space for the first time this spring---I'd always been too scared before. (I LOVE Splash and like BTMRR.)

Well, Space didn't scare me---it made me nauseated. I didn't even think I'd make it thro' the ride w/o getting sick. AWEFUL. I am very prone to motion sickness, but I didn't consider Space a ride that would make you sick. I was wrong...

Arrgh! How can you be a coaster wimp when you're so close to Cedar Point?! I used to be one, too, until I finally decided to try the coasters at the Point. Love 'em, now. Anyway to answer your question, I like Space Mtn. My daughter says it's okay and like you, she doesn't care for coasters rides that much. It's pretty mild, no big dips or drops. The "selling point" I'd say is the fact that it's enclosed and dimly lit.

I was scared of Space Mountain for years, but I finally rode it and it was NOTHING compared to what I thought. It is very fun (but very jerky in motion). In my opinion, the scariest thing is that its in the dark, but that makes it fun. There are no loops, but there are a few minor, minor drops. VERY MINOR! Thats all I remember. It's fun, but I prefer Thunder Mountain and Rock-n-Rollercoaster.
