How does MK handle rainy days at the parks?

SO it's about 61 here (not complaining) and looking out my window at MK it doesn't look like much is running from what I can tell. On misty days, does much of the park close or is it that it's just 10 am here and their just checking rides and stuff due to the rain.

Looking out your window from where? How can you tell if a ride is running or not?

Opps sorry about that. I'm currently at the Contemporary and have a Tower - TPV. From my view earlier the rides in Tomorrow land that you can usually see from the balcony running weren't, but I just looked out the window and those rides are at least moving now.

I guess the real question should be "How will you handle a Rainy day at Disney?" Disney goes on regardless, UNLESS......there is a threat of lightening in the area. I believe if the threat is within 30 miles they shut down all outdoor rides ie:Test Track, Thunder Mt., TOT etc.... How the guest handles it is more of a situation. My suggestion bring a few rain ponchos per person throw them on and keep dry. If there is thunder, duck into an eatery or gift shop and wait it out. Remember Florida is the lightening capital of the world so keep safe.

Looking out my window (about 2 miles from the Castle) its not raining/misting any longer this morning so I'd expect that everything in the MK is open.

I have personally ridden Astro Orbiter in the rain so it doesn't shut down just for that. As another poster said, lightening is another story. Just rain, though? No worries. In fact, it usually clears out a lot of the crowd but rides will still be going so it's a pretty great time to go as long as you can handle getting wet.

IMHO--Disney handles rainy days beautifully. They are in a climate where rain is kind of a part of life.

We were at Hershey Park this summer for 2 days. It rained both days and when it did almost everything shut down and it stayed closed for so long after the rain stopped. Drove me nuts. I kept thinking how Disney--when it has to shut things down, got them open much more quickly.

That said--a misty rain won't be much of an issue. The torrential downpour moments are more so--outdoor coaster tracks need to be a me to reliably use their brakes. Light rain, most things run.

FWIW, we has a rainy day at Universal last February and felt the same way. Florida theme parks just deal with rain better. :-)

Not sure your present vantage point to determine not much is running in a mist. I would think you could see the Astro-orbitor, but not much else. Maybe Big Thunder and splash?

Thanks. I was just worried about walking over and no rides being on. I will head over in a little while.

Yeah, I couldn't figure out what rides in Tomorrowland could be seen since most are inside except for Astro Orbiter and the Speedway.

Personally? I don't like you anymore! Okay........back to the question at hand.
MK runs very well in the rain. I have been on just about every ride in the rain. BTMR is something else in the rain..almost painful. Just about the only time the outside attractions stop running is if there is lightning. Otherwise, get put your ponchos and go have a good time.

As most people have said, rides keep running. Lightning will shut down rides though. Don't be afraid to stay in the rain. We've had many trips where we've splashed around wearing ponchos but still had a great time. In fact, many times the rain will clear a lot of people out of the park, which is a win for the people who stay since that makes lines less congested. Don't let the rain spoil your vacation. It's all in how you approach it!

Of all my WDW trips over the past 3 decades I can only remember one "bad" day. It was a DHS day and it didn't stop raining all day. It was miserable.

Usually rain comes and goes and down pours are short. That one day was must have been what Noah experienced. I've never seen so much standing water in a Disney park.

We left half way through the day, everything was drenched, inside and out... people can be so inconsiderate with ponchos, lol.

Anyway, every other day (and there have been hundreds of Disneys days for us at this point) and it's always been pretty easy to bounce between attractions / locations during the occasional rain storm.

I wouldn't worry about it very much, if at all.

Also consider some disposable ponchos from wally world for $1 each. I wouldn't normally recommend them but it's easier to toss a poncho than dry it and try and fold it back up and carry it around.

We buy 3-4 each, save the receipt and return what we don't use when we get back home.

If we use them, toss them when the threat of rain seems to have passed. Worked out wonderfully thus far.

Also remember at MK you can bounce from overhand to overhang pretty easy in most places without much of need for a poncho at all. That is hard to do at DHS or AK.

Almost exactly a year ago, I was at AK during a pretty heavy downpour. We were so proud of ourselves for having ponchos, and were giggling at the people ducking for cover in shops and under building overhangs. We just "ponchoed up" and soldiered on.

I thought, what a great time to ride EE! Well, I got on with no wait, and then realized that riding a fairly fast roller-coaster in the rain isn't for sissies! The rain was pelting (stinging!) my face as we whipped along the track, and I got a terrible case of the giggles. The ride photo showed me scrunched into my poncho, holding most of the hood over my face to protect it from rain pellets! Yuck. So the moral of the story is, it's a great idea to ride some rides during rainstorms, but maybe not fast coasters!
