We are researching info about going to Aulani in 2014. I am debating where to bring another couple with us. But I don't want to use all my points to do that (still want to save points to take the kiddos to WDW in 2013 and 2014). Would be the best thing is just rent the points from someone? I will have enough for 1 br but a 2 br room would need 60-70 points more. How does renting work when you have a DVC account? thanks

If you need 24 points or less, you can purchase them from MS within 7 months of your arrival date. The cost is $15 per point. Since you need more than that, you'd need to either find another member able to transfer those points into your account or find a member able to make the reservation for you - in this case, you might consider having the other couple pay for any additional points you'd need.

Good luck! :)

I'd suggest you use your points now and book what you need then deal with any shortfalls later by renting from someone else, paying for a transfer, getting a discounted cash reservation (free dining) or taking the opportunity for any non DVC trip. Or you could do an add on in the interim.

You'd probably need a transfer of points to get those extra nights. If you "rent" from another member, the points are not yours, they make the reservation and you attempt to link the two reservations (yours and theirs) to be able to stay in the same villa.

There are rules for transfers, too, so make sure you understand what you are doing before you negotiate a transfer with another member.

Easiest thing would be to forget about the idea of being magnanimous now that you are a DVC member. Not all friends understand the concept of losing points and might cancel because of airfare or other concerns.
