Do we put our timeshare out for exchange and wait for someone to want it before we can book elsewhere? We're new to whole timeshare thing and are very confused about exchanging. We purchased Marriott Horizons Platinum level and were told we would have great exchanging power but I don't know what that means. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Interval has two ways of doing an exchange: For request-first, you keep your week until you find an exchange you would accpet, but you must search for a check-in date on or before the check-in date of the week you are giving up. For deposit-first, you give Interval your week, and you have the opportunity to exchange into something up to two years after your check-in date.

Neither require that someone takes your unit first.

There are a lot of details, and Marriott has a special arrangement with Interval that operates under slightly different rules than non-Marriott owners use. In the huge pile of documentation Marriott gave you, you should find something that describes how II works.

I also recommend you join TUG, the timeshare user's group: www.tug2.net It's $15, and worth every penny. I've been able to get incredible value out of my ownerships based on what I've been learning there.

Brian, thanks for all of your knowledge. I will look through all of my paperwork and certainly join TUG. We are looking for ways to really maximize our ownership as well.

Just wanted to encourage you to go on over to TUG (see my sig) and learn more, as Brian said.

Which Horizons did you purchase - Orlando or Branson? Where would you like to go, by exchanging it?

definitely go with tug - they even have their own marriott board.

just remember to join tug - so you can read the reviews. with Marriott so upscale - 90% of the resorts won't come up to it. You need to be sure you will be happy with your exchange.

We purchased Horizons in Orlando, for now it's a great fit for our family. We're not really looking to go anywhere else right now, I was just curious on how it all worked.

Sorry, but you can't exchange into a Disney Resort with an exchange from another Orlando Resort!

Joe

Do check out TUG. Just to note, there is no fee to use their forums. They are free and the TUG ownership has indicated that they always will be free.
