What happens when you own points at one "home", and purchase additional ones at another?

Let's say, I have 200 at SSR, and I but 100 at AKV, does that mean future vacations need to be split between the 2? I'm sure I'm not asking this correctly, but 100 points isn't enough for the way we vacation, so what is the advantage of buying addtional points? I'm reading that some of you buy 50 more, even in two 25-point contracts. Why? I'm so confused :confused3

I'd love any help you could give me.

Thanks :teacher:

Points can be used at any of the DVC resorts. The only difference is that you can use your points to book a reservation at your home resorts 11 months out, while you can use them to book at the other resorts 7 months out. So, in your example, you could use all 300 points to book at any resort 7 months out.

Also, keep in mind that you can bank and borrow points to get up to 3 years points to use at once. So your person could bank and borrow their AKV points and have 300 AKV points to use at the 11 month window once every 3 years.

You could, for example, purchase 100 points at AKV and bank them to go there every other year. Thus you would have 200 points every other year to go to AKV. Or you could bank and borrow those 100 points and have a 300-point vacation every 3 years.

Thank you so much for your help. I think I get it, now.

Have a "Magical Day" :)

So 3 years is the max you can bank points? I would assume after that you lose them? Thanks

No. The most you can bank points is one year. And you can only borrow one year in advance. But if you bank, say, 2008 points into 2009, and then borrow 2010 points into 2009, you would have 3 years of points to use in 2009.

you can only bank points for one extra year.

if you don't bank them at all or you don't use them by the end of that extra year, then yes, you lose them.

you can bank this year's points into next year, and then borrow 2 years ahead to make a reservation for next year using a total of 3 years worth of points...but don't confuse that with banking for 3 years.

if you got points on feb 1, 2007 and banked them, they will expire at the end of jan 2009 if you don't use them.

The reason we purchase additional points in smaller increments is because they are more attractive on the resale market. We can sell the smaller add-ons and still keep our master contract. Just as lifechanges cause us to buy a few additional points, lifechanges may cause us the need to sell just a few.

I'm learning so much!!! So, by master contract, that is your largest number of points and not necessarily your first or even most recent contract?

Your first contract will be set up as a master contract. If you add on to that contract, (same UY, same names on the deed) they will be set up as "add ons" to your master contract.

If you purchase another contract with a different UY than your master or you put different names on the deed, it will be set up as a new master contract (different contract number, different DVC membership number). You can also purchase an additional master contract directly from Disney by purchasing a minimum of 160 points.

I think it is easier to manage your points if you have one master with add-ons to that master rather than multiple master contracts.
