How does a "HOLD" on a stateroom work?

Thinking about booking our first cruise -- a lot of info to take in! I'm confused about what it means on the DCL website to "HOLD" a stateroom? Have you officially BOOKED if you do that, just deferring paying the deposit? If so, does that mean that if you cancel that hold you pay the cancellation fee?

A hold is when you book a reservation but haven't paid for it yet. If you book before PIF (paid in full) due date then you have to pay a deposit to make a reservation. You are given 2 or 3 days to decide whether you want to put money down and cruise on that date. If you do it after PIF due date, then you have 2 or 3 days to pay the entire fare. If you don't pay anything then the stateroom goes back into being available.

There is no cancelation fee for either scenario.
