How do you transfer/rent points-NEW

Hello All! I'm new to this board and soon to be a new Vacation Club owner. I'm making the call tomorrow. How exactly does the transfer/renting of unused points work? From what I can understand from things I've been reading, if someone is looking for points I can transfer them to that member for a price (ex. $10/point)--is that easy to do? And how is that different than renting them points? I just want to make sure I understand this kind of thing, because we usually only go to WDW every 3-5 years and I may be selling points a lot. Thanks for any help and advice you can give.

In a transfer, a call is placed to DVC member services and the points are permanently removed from your account and transferred to another. You can do as many transfers in a year as you wish, but only in one direction--you cannot transfer points out and in during the same year.

Renting points is basically making a reservation in the name of a non-DVC member in exchange for some negotiated compensation. You retain total control of the points and the reservation while a total stranger is giving you hundreds or thousands of dollars to book a room in his/her name. There is typically a contract or written agreement involved as well as a LOT of trust. Also realize that you could have to do a fair amount of legwork on rentals. Depending on the number of points you wish to rent, you could end up dealing with more than one person. You will also be their only point of contact with DVC Member Services, so be prepared for (potentially) a lot of phone calls checking on different dates / resorts / room types.

Are you sure DVC is right for you? If you are truly only going to stay in a DVC resort every 3 - 5 years, IMHO you will be better off ($$-wise) just paying cash as you go. Perhaps you should be the non-member who rents points and not the owner looking to get $$ for unused points.

That was my thought too. If you truely don't intend to use them more than every 3-5 years, then DVC might not be a good investment for you. You could always use points for an exchange to another resort, but that also isn't always the best use of points, since DVC is one of the pricier timeshares around. Because of that you would want to mostly us it without an exchange. I would say DVC is for the folks who want to travel to WDW at least every other year.
