How do you split the dinner bill?

How do you divide the dinner bill when eating out with others?

  • Split the bill evenly: 50/50

  • Add up each person's total and pay individually

  • Other: please describe

  • I don't eat with others!!

We usually have a knock-down-drag-out shouting match fighting over who's going to grab the check.

I voted other because it depends on who we are with. Most of the time each couple looks at the bill and figures out what they owe. It seems to work out best that way.

We usually ask for separate checks and then just pay our own. In fact, the waiter usually asks if we want separate checks. It's easier that way since usually both couples end up paying with credit or debit cards. One of the couples has to have cash if you get one check.

Thanks for replying everybody!!

Boy, was I a crank last night about this issue!!

I don't normally mind, but when my husband and I go out with this same couple it happens every time. The guy drinks a bunch (that's a whole different issue in itself) and they spend more on the meal and then we just split it 50/50. My DH and I have never ordered equal to or more than them. We end up paying $20-30 more than our share. To me that's $20-30 less DISNEY MONEY!!!
If I were ordering more I'd never let the other couple just split it evenly. They don't even offer to pay more to cover their meal/drinks.

When it's any other couple I don't mind because like many others posted it usually breaks even. And we too take turns with couples in "treating".

Again, don't mean to sound cheap (heck, maybe I am), but just frustrated with how to handle splitting the bill.

It depends. When I go out with my friends, its normally just use seperate checks. Its much easier that way. However, like when we got to the Pizza Hut buffet in the summer, we often just use one check and split it up, or just I pay one week, you pay next week, as we go quite often.

We must be some of the lucky ones. I can't recall splitting a check with fellow diners in the past decade or so, unless it's ordering separately at a counter service or fast food establishment. My wife or I always try to grab the check first, especially since most of our dearest friends and immediate family try to do the same and are just as eager to foot the bill.

We tell the server two separate bills...unless we have invited the others to dinner then we pay for all.

We take the total and add in the tip then divide by the number of people at the table. It's easier that way. Eventually it all evens out.
