I used to dish up from the stove, but now that the kids are older we put it all out on the table so they can serve themselves. Usually it is still in the pan it was cooked it, however if it's from a large cookie sheet or something like that I will put it on a plate. When it's just my family, I try to go with whatever is less work for all of us.

Sometimes I say to heck with their independence, and I still dish from the stove. Things like soup or spaghetti are just easier that way.

Serve from the stove. And for your MIL's information-sponges are FILLED with germs.

I serve the kids from the pots on the stove. DH usually serves himself but I will get up and serve him seconds if I'm already headed that way. The big kids (twin sons 15) will serve themselves but I still make the girls' plates and cut their meat up for them too.

why dirty more dishes than necessary???? :confused3

I transfer everything from the pots and baking dishes to serving bowls and plates. I then put all the bowls on the dinner table and we all serve ourselve. I can't bring myself to serve out of a pot. My mom does what I do and she too would be think it strange if we ate out of pots. When I bake a chicken I cut it off the bone and place it on a plate for everyone to serve themselves too.

Because I thought it would be interesting to see what other people do.[/QUOTE
Well it sure has been eye opening for me! It looks like most serve from the pot. I would have thought most serve from dishes. I am shocked! LOL!

Why if you do not give two hoots are you doing this?

Cause she's interested? :confused3 Because have you seen the stupid incessant pools littering the dis???????????????????? Because she can?:confused3 Just guessing here...I'm not always captain obvious!

Oh and I voted most of it is in the pot serve yourself EXCEPT when it is something they don't like THEN I plate it! :thumbsup2

Pots and pans sit on the stove and serve the kids. DH isn't home so he reheats when he gets in.

I answered wrong ... that one little person that puts the food in the serving dishes and THEN serves the family... yeah I clicked on that but I was WRONG ...

SORRY ... I serve from the pot but put all the food on my families dishes for them and then it goes on the table. I don't know why. That's how my mom did it!!! If there is company then I will usually put the food minus the main protien in serving dishes (IE bowls) and put it on the table.

They are left in pots & pans, except for things cooked out on the grill. We serve ourselves.

I have a lot of corning ware and I like to use it, so mostly I will transfer it. They can serve themselves though.

I leave everything in the pots and then serve my family.:thumbsup2

I agree with you about not using serving bowls - I can't be bothered to clean up all those dirty dishes :sad2:

For holidays I don't do serving bowls to often either.
Everything is in a slow cooker, corning ware, or pyrex, which is then left out and served buffet style. This way there is more room on the table for the family, and no one feels crowded.

Since I do every single holiday - no one argues with how I do things, and is more concerned with me enjoying my holiday, and not being caught up in formalities - I have a great family!!!! :goodvibes

When it's just me & DH, the food stays in the pots on the stove, and I serve us both. When we have company over, food is transferred to a serving dish and we all serve ourselves.

I serve everything from the pots/pans they are cooked in and leave it on the stove. I don't want extra dishes to wash.

Comes from pot, pan, etc. I serve it up for them from that.

Serving dishes are for company and holidays.

I usually keep everything in the pots and pans but we sit down at the table and the family serves themselves. Now on special occasions, like Thanksgiving, I use serving dishes.

I put the pots and pans on the table and I serve the little ones. Big ones can serve themselves, of course sometimes I add a few more veggies for them! ;)

When I cook it's a "Come and get it", pots on the stove kinda meal...when my wife cooks its family style in the dining room.

It's just DH and I, so I plate our food, put it on a huge tray with napkins, salt & pepper, beverages, sauces and other things we may need and carry it to the family room. We eat on TV trays in front of the screen. Good times! :thumbsup2

When company (small crowd) is here I use the dining room and nice china and food is served from bowls.

For Christmas (huge crowd), I set up a buffet using Pyrex, Corning or whatever bakeware that things were cooked in and allow everyone to serve themselves. I learned not to try and get matching serving pieces for the Christmas china because so many other people were bringing their dishes and they *certainly didn't match*, so no need for mine to either. We all sit down together in the dining room to eat. Yeah, huge crowd...buffet. :thumbsup2
