How do you respond to Craigslist job posting?

I haven't replied to a job posting on Craig's List before, and I'm not sure what is expected. There is no phone number (even though it says phone calls are ok), and the listing is fairly generic. Is the poster expecting a resume or can I email an inquiry about coming to their location to apply?

I would send an email asking them for information first. Does it give the name of the company? If not I would be very careful what info you provide. Could be a scam to steal identities. Well, I guess even if they give the company name you should be careful, but at least you have a way of verifying if there is an actual open position.

I agree! Respond and ask for more information. If they are legitimate they'll send you all the information you need. Then do some research online prior to submitting more than your name and phone number.

I agree ask for more info and do NOT do a credit report if they ask, that happened to me once. no i didn't do the credit report. I saw through it and deleted it.

I'd send an email with your resume attached and have the body of the actual email be a sort of cover letter.

Craigslist is getting so popular with employers looking to hire that I just don't think it's prudent to play the game of going back and forth with e-mails before you send a resume. HR folks just don't have the time and that's a good way to not be considered before you start.

I obviously wouldn't put your social or anything on your resume and be very aware of anything they ask for you after you respond. (I.e.: Don't send them money, don't give them any financial information, your social, etc.)

There wasn't a company name on the ad and it was a craigs list email, so no indication of who they are so I am a little skeptical. I wrote a short email asking if I could come by to complete an application at their location and for their address.

I work for a not-for-profit on my free time (and sit as a Board Officer) and we hired two employees from a Craigslist ad, but we were specific of who the company was, contact information both electronic, voice and paper and the job description. I think Craigslist even warns about generic postings for job offers as most are scams.

I think you did the right thing. I wouldn't send a resume' unless I knew the name/location of the company. I've read through hundreds of Craigslist job postings and many give the name of their company and the city.

Any company that gives only the generic Craigslist email should expect questions by email in my opinion.

I agree with the other poster's, email them before giving too much info. It boggles my mind why people place ads on Craigslist but do not provide telephone numbers. I've been interested in purchasing merchandise with no way to contact them.:confused3

I don't put my phone number on things for sale, I let them contact me via the Craigslist e-mail first. This helps reduce spam in my mailbox and not have my number easily identified. Business listings are different.

Honestly, it's just how job applications are done nowadays.

Even if they were to provide a number, the standard response is going to be to email them your resume and cover letter and they'll be in touch. Listing a phone number isn't going to do much good for the applicant and creates a LOT of hassle for the hiring manager (having to deal with the influx of phone calls). Actually, that's one of the reasons some companies won't list their specific companies name as well... so people won't just start showing up to drop stuff off.

Well yeah, I can understand the job applications. OP said ad said it was ok to call but there was no number. I just find it annoying when someone places an ad for merchandise with sketchy information or with so little detail that I have skipped over it and moved on to another. Yeah, I could email someone but I would rather just call and physically talk to someone than to correspond back and forth through email. I'm the same with text messaging, I would rather just call and talk than to text a story.

The bad thing with craigslist is that a lot of scammers post there so you have to juggle whom is legit and whom is not.

My dh is a craigslist junky. We sell and buy. It is dumb to put your phone number in the ad. You just don't do that.

What you do is send them an email and then they size you up then to see of you are legit. Normally this is the negotiation for the price of the item.

All you have to say is, I am interested and then you give your number/or ask for seller number.

We only do local buying/selling. You do have to watch for scams. It is just a part of doing business on CL.
