I may go look at a dog tonight for my DD. We are looking for a Bichon and there is a local breeder that has one. From my thread on the subject and looking at sites one thing stated to look for is the current conditions of where the puppy lives.

The only other time I've gotten a pet from somewhere other than a shelter was about 20 yrs ago. I wanted a Persian cat and answered an ad. My roomate & I went out to see her and she was in terrible condition. Matted and had fleas crawling everywhere, the people said they were getting rid of her because she didn't get along with the other cat. She was declawed but obviously spent time outdoors. I couldnt' leave her there! I paid them the price they asked and took her home. After vet visits and tending she was a beautiful cat that I'm very glad I was able to have. I never regretted my decision.

I don't think I can say no to a puppy I'm almost afraid to go look.

Thanks for the help catsrule. :p

I even had to sneak a look at the persian kitties on the adoption sites. I can't have one until my 8yo DD moves away from home though so I shouldn't even torture myself.

Just think of all the 'puppy messes' it is going to leave..........

How about the family momentos it is bound to destroy.........

If you have young ones; it might nip.........

Some puppies might be hyper...a bit crazy..........

Special food you have to buy..........

Might not adjust to its new environment.........

Might not get along with other family pets..........

Might be a 'barker' and keep everyone awake for years & years....

Might outgrow your home and you'll have to buy a new one.......

I'm just trying to give you the negatives (because I have been there and done that) but I have to agree, I would not pay much mind to these once I actually see the puppy. They are very hard to resist! One sound word of advice I have is to make sure you know about the breed your are wanting. Make sure it sounds like it will fit into your 'family style'. Good luck, I'm sure your decision will be a good one for you, your family, and the pet!

They will leave fur balls all over your furniture, but they are cute fur balls. You won't have to pick up any food that falls on the floor.

Get the puppy. you need him/her...he/she needs you so much. :teeth: my bad.:teeth:

Just don't pick it up and let it lick your face and wag its tail and bat the eyes! and you will be fine! So I would say don't go!!!!!!!!!!!:D That is how we got Jessie we were just looking at my cousin's friend cute little puppies.....her tail wagged a wee bit too much! and those big clumsy feet!

Bichon's don't shed that's part of why we can have one. No fur balls on the furniture just one that walks!

I've already given the girls a lecture about that puppies eat everything they find on the floor and it's not good for them to eat people food. ;)

All the more reason to adopt the puppy. Just wait till the bat those little eyes at you, and rub against you, the soft fur.....:teeth:

Catsrule I don't think we are helping......

I don't have to resist...my husband does that for me. Anytime I bring up the subject of buying a puppy he goes on and on about the mess it'll make, the money it costs to feed it and care for it, etc. I don't think he'll ever let us have one. I have to have one though! It goes along with my vision of the perfect family...you know, the one with a house, two kids, a white picket fence and a cute little puppy running around :)

I can't resist! :( That's one of the reasons I never, ever go to shelters or into pet stores that sell/adopt puppies/dogs. When I was thinking about getting a dog, a friend of mine was going to go to the shelter for me to get me a dog. No way could I go, I'd come home with as many as the shelter would let me have!

I'm no help either, sorry. I just wanted to say good luck and let us know if you have a new member of your family tonight or not. :D :p :D

I resist puppies by taking my DH with me everywhere... he's cruel and won't let me get another furbaby no matter how I beg :(

Your telling me I went to Petco ad I wanted to rescue all of those animals... even the non fuzzy ones. But esp the miniature hamsters... although I do want to keep my house... :) LOL

Well thats an easy one for me. I just think about how it is going to be my responsibility to take care of it. In your case I would view it as it needs to be a good match for the kids. I would need to be careful with decision since I don't want to have to give it away and break my kids hearts because I didn't take the time to be careful with the decision.
Now thats a dose of reality. Unfortuately it is based in fact. :(
Good Luck

It's really easy for me resist puppies,. If I ever start to forget, a puppy kiss usually does the trick. My skin gets red, hot & then the hives appear.

Cats are even worse.

Jeannine - I've been researching for awhile. I've always thought Bichon's were adorable and they are one of the few dogs that seem to do well for people with allergies. Even with that we'll try to keep it out of younger DD's room. Since it is will be my 11yo's dog and she isn't allergic she very much wants it in her room to sleep etc so that isn't a problem.

I would hate to have to give up a pet. I've never had to make that choice. My beloved kitty was gone before 2nd DD was born, my MIL was allergic but since I had my kitty before my DH she just had to suffer when she came to visit.

When I took my ds to the allergist and told him that our dog doesn't shed (soft-coated wheaten terrier), he told me that it doesn't matter because that is not what people are allergic to. It is the saliva, (dried) urine, and skin oils that cause the allergies, not the hair as most people think. You might want to "test drive" a certain breed before you bring one home. Maybe have your allergic child spend an hour or two playing and being licked by a Bichon and make sure she doesn't have a reaction.

That is true Denise. There is something a little different - not sure of the technical terms in the coat of a bichon and poodle is not the same coat as other dogs. The dander is the culprit and the more a dog sheds the more dander it tends to leave other places. Although no dog is perfect these are rated very well and most allergic people can tolerate them. My allergic DD has been licked and pets other dogs all the time with no problems. She's tested positive to pet danders but I really have never noticed a reaction to them so I don't think the allergy is severe.
