How do you rent DVC points?

Can someone please explain the concept/process to me? I posted on the resorts board, frustrated with the lack of affordable on-site options for a family of 5, and numerous people recommended renting points. I have tried skimming the boards, reading the FAQs and such, but I can't find a good explanation of exactly what that is and how it makes a trip to DW more affordable. I can say that I have gleaned enough to know that it's not something we'd ever buy into...become full members. We will probably take 2-3 Disney vacations over the course of the next 10 yrs, and possibly again when we have grandchildren. Any input on this would be appreciated!
Thanks,

Travel with a family of 5 is just tough using any set of choices. Depending on the age of children, you might need to get a 2 BR or two studios. Renting points makes sense if you will eat a portion of the meals in the room and take advantage of the kitchen facilities. Doing Sun-Fri stays is also a great way to save. I understand that many of the WDW hotels have rooms that accomodate 5 with a trundle bed and that includes the moderates and suspect that or two value rooms may be your cheapest option for on site.

Your cheapest option overall will likely be one of the suite hotels or an off property timeshare, especially if you can travel other than summer, Xmas or Easter.

As for the process, it's simply find one who wants to rent at a price you both agree on. The owner makes the reservation and gets paid under the terms. There are risks but they are somewha minimal. You have no tax and a few benefits to renting from a member. Good luck.
