How do you pronounce "hummous?"

All of my Arabic friends pronounce it hoo-mousse. But I pronounce it hum muss because I think it's weird when people try to speak with other peoples' accents. I've never heard any other pronunciation for gyro other than Yee-ro.

I pronounce it two ways depending on who I'm speaking with and where I am. Here in the US I'd say hum-us (short u), speaking with native English speakers. But I'd say hoo-moose when speaking with Hebrew speakers (the first syllable starts with a Hebrew "chet" which is not translatable to English, but is the same sound at the beginning of the word chutzpah.).

My DIL's Mom is from Italy-she pronounces her DD's name completely different than the American way to pronounce.

I pronounce it hoo-(m)us when ordering at an authentic Lebanese/Palestinian/Israeli restaurant without even realizing it.. They pronounce it the same way too. If I'm talking about it to a friend or in a grocery store, I'll say pronounce it hum-miss.

I don't even know what that is. So I have no idea how it's pronounced!

We call ricotta ri-COTE-ah. But my husband is Italian (grandparents were immigrants) so they still pronounce Italian words with their regional Italian pronunciation.

I do the same thing with Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and some other words, pronounce them differently depending on who I'm speaking to. I say hum-us, but if I were ordering it in another country I'd say it the other way.
