Agree with the others, but I have a neighbor who pronounces it hyoo-mus (like humid) and it drives me nuts, although I suppose she could be right and we all pronounce it wrong

Yeah...that's how my DH says it and he's Arab. I say humm-is.

All of my Arabic friends pronounce it hoo-mousse. But I pronounce it hum muss because I think it's weird when people try to speak with other peoples' accents. I've never heard any other pronunciation for gyro other than Yee-ro.
