The “crayon” thread got me thinking about another word that is pronounced differently in my family. Younger DD pronounces “milk” as “MELK.” No one else does this. Not sure where it comes from but we were just having this conversation last week and just yesterday heard a newscaster say the word, “melk.” So, I was just curious…how do YOU pronounce cow juice? :p

I rhyme with silk, but most everyone I know say melk. Both sound ok to my ear

I refuse to answer the poll on the grounds that I get really annoyed by nitpicking pronunciations. I think I say "milk" but others might hear it as "melk" on occasion I'd guess. I had a roommate whose boyfriend was named Ken. She used to correct me constantly because apparently I often said something close to "Kin" instead of "Ken."

My sister says melk, but everyone else in the family says it milk like silk. Not sure where she got that from. She also says pillow like yellow. I guess she just likes to be different.

Rhymes with silk

When my youngest brother was 3 or so he used to call it nok (knock). He’s still a weirdo lol

Listening to myself say it, the sound is actually malk (short a) and I can't think of a word that rhymes with that. :confused3

This is an example of the Pin-Pen Merger! It’s very common.
