When I lived in Maine, they said wata.

When I lived in Philly, they said wooder which is how I still say it.

Here in Virginia, people say wahter.

How do you prounce it?

I say it the Philly way, which is also the Baltimore way to say it. I've tried to train myself to say wahter, since it looks like it should be said that way, but I slip back to my Baltimore roots and say wooder almost always.

Since I believe those of us living in the West do not have an accent, and, of course, we pronounce everything correctly. The answer is wahter. ;) :) just like it's spelled.

In my part of Illinois it's WATER :D

Our choir director would argue with all of these choices. She would insist that we sing "wahtah".

Didn't Frankie Laine sing about "Cool Clear Wahtah"???

I pronounce it wah-ter. Now, the one I am really confused with is if you have a constant flow of water running through, say, your back yard, is that called a creek or a crick? ;) :D

"wahter", just like it's spelled!

Oh, BTW, it's a Creek!

being from NYC...there's really no way to spell it how it actually sounds there. Waw-dah is about as close as I can type it :p ;) My mom has lived in California for over 20 years and still pronounces it this way. I've been in CT for 27 years and it only slips out of my mouth that way sometimes....otherwise, I say it as wawter...kinda ;) :p

LOL!!! And is it also Ill-i-NOISE?????

Just kidding.

If you're interested, I posted a website the other week that had an interesting Dialect Survey that a Professor at Harvard was conducting --

http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~golder/dialect/index.html

If you have some time (there's about 100 some questions), take it -- it deals with how you pronounce things and what you call things/people.

I pronouce it water. For those of you who pronounce it wahter, isn't the h silent?

wah-ter (with a silent 'h')

...and growing up in PA, it was a "crick" -- but if I say that these days around Ohio I get stared at like I'm an alien! :p
