How do you observe Good Friday?

We shut off all radios, TV and computer from 12 -3 ...quiet refelection on the meaning of the day....

and of course no meat to eat....

Staions of the Cross - no snacking - seafood for dinner. I used to fast but not anymore.

Our kids are off today and don't go back to school until April 4

We will be having a celebration dinner tonight at church. We're celebrating that God loved us enough to give his sons life for someone like me. Jesus' death on the cross however tragic, should be a celebration to all that believe he died for you and me so that we may have eternal life.

We will go to church tonight at 7 and read the Passion. We went to Holy Thursday mass last night and we will go to Easter Vigil tomorrow night. Our schools are off until Tuesday and I always take off work from Holy Thursday - Easter Monday.

I love the Holy Week masses. There is a different kind of energy/feeling in church this week. We went last night for Holy Thursday, we will go again for Good Friday Mass, Easter Vigil mass tomorrow is my FAVORITE Mass of the year and then Mass again on Easter Sunday.

I might have to suggest a showing of the Passion of Christ in church on Good Friday next year. What a powerful way to spend Good Friday!

Last night we had Communion and the stripping of the altar. Tonight will be the service of light and darkness.

I don't observe it, I am waiting for Passover. I have issues with "Easter" and the timing of it. :)

Why would you question when a religion celebrates their holiday? :confused3
That's being disrespectful to others
I don't question your holidays and the "timing of it".

No school or work today, so we slept late. Pizza for dinner, not sure why cause it had meat. We're not big church goers.

I'm not a big fan of meat, so giving it up on Fridays during Lent is a moot point with me. I wish it was like the old days when Catholics gave up meat *every* Friday.

I don't eat meat on Friday. But it's not that big of a sacrafice because my wife is a great cook and does some amazing things with beans. Every year I promise to give up something I really like, but fail ever time. Oh well the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

Can someone explain Service of Shadows and Stations of the Cross?

Not so sure about service of shadows.

But the stations of the cross is where you walk the stations where christ carried his cross to the place where he was crucified. I believe there are 13 stations. There is also a living stations of the cross where actors reenact it. It is very moving.

Schools closed..other than that everythings the same. I actually took off from work today though-its a paid holiday, stay home for regular pay or work for double time and a half. Went and got my car inspected, to the bank, took my daughter out for a haircut, went to home depot, Made a quick dinner of chicken parm then my daughter had taekwondo class, went to see Robots after that, came home and dyed Easter Eggs....normal type day.

MY 2 DD and I went to a cruxification mass. It was very moving, a 90 minutes service that went by very fast. I didn't go to stations of the cross service , I'd like to do that next year.

I love Holy Week at our church. We are well known in our area as "the church with the steps". We are up on a hill and there are many steps leading up to the front of the church from the street below. For a 24 hour period on Good Friday, people from all over come to pray the steps. For most, this means to say a prayer as you pause on each step. Many say the rosary as they go up. Our pastor always blesses the steps at midnight on the morning of Good Friday and leads the first group up with the rosary. Thousands of people make this "pilgramage" each year. Our church stays open all night. This year I was a greeter from 1-5AM.

On Holy Thursday we had a dinner after the 7PM mass. This was to celebrate Christ giving us the Eucharist. Everyone brings wine and cheese and that type of thing which get blessed during the mass. We also do the washing of the feet at that mass. On Good Friday we have a fish fry and two services. This year I attended at 7:30 PM since my son was an alter server. The service always makes me cry--and did not fail in that last night.
We watched the uncut version of the Passion of the Christ when we returned home from church. We usually also do some big cleaning project on Good Friday. Yesterday we cleaned the garage.

Really looking forward to Easter!
