How do you leave the room upon check out?

Pretty much the same for us-

clean out fridge
consolidate towels in a pile
tidy up
leave sofa bed open if used
run dishwasher or if in studio leave anythiing out that we used but we wash them.
pretty much leave it the way we found it-do not strip beds tho just make it look neat.

Okay, getting worried here.

I thought part of our dues were for housekeeping.

Is that not the case? Are we suppose to clean the room? Take out the trash? Strip the beds?

Is there a list of what should be done before we leave? Maybe posted on the back of the door? Or somewhere in the kitchen?

Disney is paid millions of dollars by DVC owners for housekeeping and they are paid a higher wage so we don't tip.

We do the following to expedite the room turn over for the next guest.

Toss all towels in the bath tub.
Toss all opened food in the trash, housekeeping will take the rest home.
Leave the beds open that were used to insure that they get fresh linens.
Start the dish washer, I don't want housekeeping just rinsing them off in the sink and putting them away because they are short on time.

We toss towels in bathtub, clean out fridge and consolidate the garbage (usually into a garbage bag i bring from home).

I do tip housekeeping $5 a night for a studio. I am so thankful to be on vacation & appreciate housekeeping's efforts, enjoy paying it forward in this small measure.

Believe it or not, but I actually make up the bed before we leave. Plus I like to pick up everything and leave the room in as good a condition as to when we arrived. Now my DW gets mad at me when I do this and she has been known to come behind me and pull the covers back down :lmao:. I just like a tidy room.

Possibility exists that fresh linens won't be put on the bed or sofa if you make the bed.

We have had dirty linens left on the sofa before.

You have no obligations to do anything. Treat it like you would a hotel room.

I do this as well.

I'm not going to clean the room like it's my own house, but I figure if the beds are open the housekeeper can quickly strip and remake them. Dishes are already washing in the dishwasher so one less thing for the housekeeper to do. Towels are all in one place so easy to grab and trash is all in one place so easy to grab.

The above takes very little time and I feel like ti might move things along a bit more quickly for the next guest.

I leave it just like I leave a hotel room. Bed unmade, towels in a pile. All trash in the appropriate bins. I do strip the sofa bed.

The only extra is that I run the dishwasher with any remaining dishes and the coffeepot parts that are washable before I walk out.

I would think it would not take too much longer than what it takes to clean a hotel room.

I think it is okay to have the maid strip the beds making sure all the linen is there. I too place all of the towels in the tub and empty the trash and recycle to the appropriate bins (I should say at most of the resorts--OKW is more difficult for me due to knee problems and the stairs). If staying in a villa with a dishwasher I will run it before vacating. And if we use the pull out couch or chair we leave them open when exiting the villa. I will call maintenance and report any items that need to be fixed in the villa that I haven't already reported. Lastly I will call housekeeping to let them know we are departing and the room can be cleaned for the next guest. Although I am not convinced that calling really encourages housekeeping to clean a room because they appear to be a set schedule that is not affected by guests leaving a room before checkout time.

Do not worry about what others do, treating it like a regular hotel room is perfectly acceptable.

You don't have to do anything except vacate the room by 11 AM.

The others are just describing what they do to help housekeeping get the room ready for the next guests. They hope their efforts will allow the next guests to get into the room early and that they'll pay it forward - and thus they might have a better chance of getting in early themselves next time.

I think in this case, the nicest thing we can all do for each other, is call Mousekeeping on check out directly, and let them know you're leaving. I don't think its necessary we leave the room clean, that is their job, not ours. But if they can get in there as early as possible to do that, we all benefit:thumbsup2.

We leave the sofa bed open and strip the linens off of it. We do not strip the other beds. I throw all the used towels into the bath tub, and put any dirty dishes in the dishwasher and turn it on. Hopefully that helps housekeeping get a head start!

We're pretty much always in a 1 bdrm these days (once you leave a studio for a 1 bdrm...no going back IMO) so we always load/start the dishwasher. We also empty the frig and take all of our trash to the trash room (we usually do this on a daily basis anyway...at least the kitchen bag). If we have any unopened food items, either in frig or dry goods I also leave them with a note to please feel free to take the items. I just can't justify throwing unopened items in the trash. If we have used the sofabed I do strip it and leave the bedding neatly on the floor....that way there is no way housekeeping can even think it wasn't used. I also at least pull the bedding up in the bedroom, but, do not strip that bed. I also gather all towels and throw them all in the tub together making it easier to bundle them for laundering. I also wipe the kitchen counters and stove/frig quickly....leaving everything neat. I pretty much feel our DVC is our home away from home and treat it as I would my own home.

Thank you, everyone.

I was concerned that there were things that I should be doing.

Our first stay in this month and I wouldn't want to miss following a rule.

This exactly!!
As stated by PP, there are no "rules" at DVC properties about how to leave a room at check out. As Caron MN stated, I try to do a few things to help speed up the turnover process of the Villa. And really, in my opinion, it is pretty much common courtesy to pick up a bit before leaving the room. I do know that not everyone agrees with my view, but this is what we do.
I have been in rentals (beach house on the Outer Banks, NC) where there were "rules" about how and by when you needed to leave the rental. But not DVC. You don't have to do anything.
