If you go to wDW website and look at the specials, they list the date ranges. For packages, as long as you res. starts within the range your entire stay will be eligilbe for the giftcard or FD. Room only is just the date range.

The disney special offers page lists the dates each discount is valid. If you do not fall into one of those date ranges, you are blacked out. With FD if your arrival day is not a black out day, then you can apply it to your entire stay. With room only, it is valid for only the dates listed.
