How do you handle things like this?

Tomorrow I'm going to a baby shower. Don't know what they will be serving for refreshments. I'm doing WW so I don't know how I'd calculate points for whatever it happens to be. I don't know if I should just steel myself to resist whatever it is. Its hard to be strong if everyone else is eating something that looks really yummy!

How do you handle these types of situations, regardless of whatever plan you are on?

Well, so far I've been pretty much in control of my food but I haven't attended a shower or birthday party yet, either.

I thought you could have anything on WW. Don't they have some type of point assignment for cake? You could have a tiny piece of cake and steel yourself to resist the other goodies.

Why don't you take a "legal" treat with you to the party?

If the shower is in the afternoon, I would eat as lightly as possibly during the morning thus by saving your points and drinking a lot of water early on. Also, if you have any banked points for the week you could use them. I agree with Katholyn, I would bring along a safe snack in my bag just in case, but I am sure you will be able to find some things to eat at the shower. I know vegetable platters are usually really popular at a lot of things, if that is the case it will really help. Also when eating things you aren't sure of just be careful if you don't want to go off program. And remember, if you do go out of point range, tomorrow is another day, with WW you are trying to incorporate healthy eating into your everyday life, not deprive yourself, so one slip up will not sabotoge everything. Good luck and have fun.

If it's a party, I try not to totally pig out (unless I've told myself in advance that it's ok.) :) I was on WW back in the DC area and the office I worked in always had parties and showers and gatherings. I just stuck to the veggie tray, like Tiggerlover suggested. I stayed away from any sour cream or cheese based dips.

If you feel comfortable with the idea of indulging once in a while, then have a small taste of the things you enjoy eating at parties.

I found that after limiting my desserts/sweets for several weeks that I didn't have any desire for cakes or pies or ice cream. I actually preferred fruit and veggies and other healthy foods.

Have a great time and don't be too hard on yourself. Enjoy the shower and the time spent with your friends. :)

Oh, and limit yourself to a small glass of punch and try to stick to water for the rest of the party. :)

I agree with what everyone else is saying. Drink lots of water and eat something before you go. Have a small "treat" if you want to - or you might feel deprived and overeat later anyway (at least that's what happens to me).

If it were me, I'd probaby make sure I've eaten a balanced, good meal before I go, and then enjoy some safe snacks and maybe have a small indulgence. If I remember correctly, many years ago on WW that is what they recommended... not to go to a party or event starving so you are set up to overeat.

Sound advice in this thread. Note to self. Do the same! Go, have fun, do your best!

Look at your points book before you go. When I found out how many points a piece of cake was, I really didn't want it because it wasn't worth the points.

Plan ahead and allow yourself something, but do it wisely.

Here is what I do when I know I have a party to go to. I am also on WW, have lost 23 pounds and have attended many a party since September.

First of all, bulk up in the early part of the day. An egg white omelet with a slice of 2% cheese, lots of veggies in it is still only 1 to 2 points. My DH chops up 2 Morningstar Farms vegetarian sausage in there for another point and I can last until 2 in the afternoon without being hungry for only 3 points. Sometimes I add a lite English muffin for a 4th point, but I have had a feast if I eat this.

Before I get dressed to go, I try to eat a big salad with low fat dressing (1 point)or a can of green beans or beets or another free veggie. That way, I am not starved when I get there.

Drink water or decaf tea throughout the day.

Save points throughout the week if you know you have plans later in the week.

Try to focus on the event, not the food when you get there. Figure out as soon as possible where you are going to spend your points. I am a real sweets person, and always make sure to have at least some of the cake/cookies/etc.

I find that I rarely go over my points if I do this, and sometimes eating like this helps my metabolism and I even lose more that week!

Good luck and enjoy the shower.

Most showers include some sort of a veggie tray. I agree that would be a great start for you.

Just wanted to wish you luck at making some good choices. Let us know how it went for you when you return!
:D

Home from the baby shower for my niece! I took a little Tupperware container of 16 Junior Mints (3 pts.) so if I decided not to eat whatever they were serving I could eat that. I love Jr. Mints! Anyway, they served brownies with ice cream & hot fudge topping and I wasn't even tempted! I had 10 pts. I could use if I chose to, but I chose not to!

I bought myself a Smart Ones dinner as a treat since I did good!

Thanks for all the support and great, great ideas!!!

Yay, Liz! One more temptation out of your way!

Taking the Junior Mints was a great idea- I'll have to remember that.

Glad to hear it Liz!! Keep up the good work.

And thanks for the info on Jr. Mints, I had no idea.
