We've flown into MCO and West Palm. West Palm is closer, but car rental rates are higher and for me the choice of direct flights was rather limited(I think NWA/DL had 2 directs per day out of DTW during the spring).
Another airport choice is Melbourne, but it's small and has less options, therefore usually more expensive than MCO. But you never know! I'm not sure if it's closer than West Palm or not - Melbourne's about (guessing) 35 minutes from Vero, I'd say.

There's a new charter airline doing business as Jet America that will begin routes from Newark to Melbourne in July. Rates look pretty good but the schedule is limited. However, if the schedule works for you it might be a good option.

Yes, until the PP posted I had forgotten about that new service. I used to live in Melbourne, but don't really have a need to go there anymore (at least not on my own dollar - only business trips). I'll have to keep that in mind for our cruise out of PC next winter! (Isn't it pathetic that I lived there and didn't even know how far away West Palm was - I didn't get out much!)
we always seem to end up GOING down the toll roads (towards cocoa beach and then melbourne) then coming back up 192 through st. cloud. Honestly, I don't think it makes much difference really. I almost think I prefer driving 192, at least until you get to kissimmee.
