Biodegradable vs latex means nothing when it comes to how dangerous it can be for wildlife. Biodegradable just means that it will degrade at some point in time. That time period is still longer then the time it takes for the balloon to become a possible hazard.
Plus, it is still littering. My cup may be biodegradable, but that doesn't mean I throw it out my car window.
There has been research that a single balloon produces a miniscule amount of litter when returning to earth. It's because it freezes and shreds, that's why biodegradable is important and YES it does make a difference for the wildlife.
Yes, a mass release is different but we aren't talking about that and it's important to make a distinction between both. If a balloon slips out of a kids hands they aren't going to be charged with a crime, nor should they as they can't pick it back up.
Yep, we let it go. Though I Would love to know how releasing a ballon is harmful to wildlife. We have school fundraiser that release balloons each and every year and the one that goes the furthest wins a prize (usually goes several states away).
How it is harmful to wildlife? Because wildlife don't know what it is. And wildlife will attempt to eat things to see what they are. Humans can't tell wildlife not to eat something - well, we can but the wildlife is not going to understand.
As a human, think about eating a balloon. Would you want to? Wildlife doesn't need to eat a balloon, they just eat what is on the ground because they have no one to ask, "is this OK?" They don't have anyone giving them food three times a day. They actually have to live on their own.
Wow such wonderful and kind hearted education for something I had never heard of in my almost 40 years. Thanks to all. For all of those schooling me I will be available in Disney in September for a public tar and feathering if your schedule allows. Just be sure not to bring any balloons ; )
How are the balloons tied? Is it just with string or do they do just knot the bottom. I really want to take mine home and frame it to commemorate my first Disney trip.
