I ordered a backpack off of ebay - was told it was new - might as well could be, it's in great condition -- but reeeeeeks of cigarette smoke ... Boy does it smell! I'm a non- smoker and no one in my family smokes, sooo not used to this.
Even the postal box it came in reeeeks!

How would you get rid of the smell?
Febreeze? I have it outside in my porch now ...

Thanks! :)

Can it be washed? I'd toss it in the washer. If not, try a dry-cleaner.

Febreeze might work but it would take a lot.

And ew. How rude of the seller.

whenever my dad brings me something (he and my stepmother are both chain smokers, and i'm allergic to cigarette smoke), i have to leave it outside on the front porch table for several days. that usually takes care of the problem. good luck, OP!

Thank you both --- hopefully fresh air will do it some good ;)

Unsure if I can wash it, it's a backpack cooler.... heat might hurt the inside material

Some friends of our family are smokers and every year we have to put the Christmas presents they give us out in the garage for several days to "air out".

Fresh air, outdoors for a while. :thumbsup2

No suggestion, but a funny story, well, kind of. The company I work with gets an invoice from this one individual we do business with. She hand delivers the invoice to our office and we all know when it arrives because it reaks so bad of smoke. I don't know how you can make paper smell THAT bad, I mean, you can smell it standing 20 feet away. Needless to say, we create a disbursement warrant for it as soon as it gets there just so we can send it off to accounts payable and out of our area.

I just wanted to add... the smoke might not be from the seller.

We have a mailman here in our town that smokes in the mail truck.
Another that smokes when he picks up our packages.

I am a ebay seller and make sure every item we send is sealed in plastic.

I did talk to someone at the post office and was told they are not allowed to leave the truck to smoke and independent carriers can do what the please in their own cars~

You could be right, but .... I checked the ebay listing just to make sure I read it correctly, maybe I was in such a rush to order it and get it that I didn't read the listing that well.

Well, that's not the case, in their feedback, there are a handful of comments, I scrolled back about 100 or so and 1/4 of them had mentioned things 'reeked' of smoke... Products were good, but they reeked ;)

Maybe I should have read the feeback, I usually don't.. I've been very lucky on ebay ordering things and everything, besides 1 years ago, was as described.

I emailed him/her, just waiting back to see.

Cost me probably 1/2 of what I paid for the backpack to send it back.

I'll have to see if I can find another somewhere before I send it back.

What about using some coffe grounds (unsed) to help absorb the odor and replace with a less offensive scent? Or maybe put a cut citris fruit inside to leech out the smell?

Good idea ;) will try it .. thank you!!

I'm gonna grab it in from my porch and try the coffee before putting febreeze on it or anything like that...

Hate to use products, then put food in it, since it's a cooler...

My mother is a very heavy smoker, and whenever I leave her house, my coat, handbag, and clothes absorb that smell. Ugh. I can toss the clothes in the washing machine, but the coat & handbag are not washable.

I hang them on a hanger, then hang them in the garage overnight. I also spray those things with Febreeze. The odor comes out....just give it time.

Also wanted to add....toss a few Downey fabric softener sheets inside the backpack. That'll definitely help.

There are several things that will help. Placing it outside with the inside stuffed with crumpled newspaper will help. If you can find charcoal without light fluid already on it, and then place the charcoal inside of it for a few days it will help dissipated the smell. You can wrap the charcoal in paper towels so it does not discolor the inside of the back pack.

I hope this helps! :thumbsup2

Put a bowl of vinegar in the cooler. Vinegar is supposed to absorb or destroy smoke odors.

Does it have the plastic lining like a lunch bag would have? If it does it should be fine in the wash, just don't dry it. I would run it through the wash with some vinegar and air dry.

Yes, I has a liner like a lunch tote/bag. Soft material like.

I emailed the seller, she's willing to refund my money unsure if that means return the product, I'm waiting for her to answer.

Ty for the tips!
