I had squirrels in the attic last fall. They were kind of a PITA to trap but I did eventually get all 3 (1 adult 2 youngsters).
Let me start by saying you MUST PLUG THE HOLE!! I found the hole and plugged it just to have the dang thing chew right back threw the wood
I re-plugged it and then covered it with some heavy duty chicken wire...chew through that sucker!!!
I then borrowed (you can buy one but why?) a live trap from the local humane society. I put a huge glob of peanut butter inside and then put the trap in the attic.
Let me stop here and say I have a house built in the 50's with no real attic. It is more like a crawl space. I thought I could just stick my head through the little door in the ceiling and put the trap on the nearest beam. WRONG-O!! After the first week and no squirrel I figured out I had to crawl on my stomach all the way to the other side of the house in the semi-dark (it is hard to crawl, carry a trap and shine a flashlight in front of you) and set the trap up where I actually heard the squirrels. You know, right above my bed where they would begin their darn burrowing every morning at 5:30am!
Anyways with the trap set right near by them the smell of the peanut butter was just too much for them. I caught the first within 2 hrs of setting the trap. I then had to crawl back on my stomach bring the trap down ** WEAR GLOVES. Squirrels are nasty hell-ish little things with big huge claws and a nasty temper when trapped in a metal cage **
I took it to the nearest park and dumped it. Maybe not the right thing to do but I was working on 1 1/2 months of dealing with this squirrel infestation. I went back to the house and proceeded to bait trap, crawl through attic, capture squirrel, retrieve squirrel and set it free until the other 2 were caught as well.
Good Luck!
