How do you fix a garage door?

Our garage door has been sounding really rough lately and "sticking" a bit on raising and lowering.

I'm thinking the track / wheels need to be oiled, am I right? If so, with what? Will just plain WD-40 do the trick?

Thanks!

We just had our garage doors redone and it cost a fortunue but after 17 years it was needed. They replaced the rollers, springs, wires and connections and completely replaced one of the openers. Ours too made a lot of noise and finally the support bar for the openers (both happened at the same time) came down when the door stuck to the floor during our last freeze several months ago. You can try oil, you are suppose to oil the rollers every few months, but if they are old, they may need to be replaced. Good luck. Jay

I was told by the guy who put up the garage door that we needed to put oil, not WD-40 on the coil.

So, I have the oil, and it's been sitting on my kitchen counter for a few weeks now.

Just had a new opener put in a few weeks ago (door was about 5 years ago). The installer (from an old-timel, well-known and very large garage door company) said to use WD-40 on rolllers, hinges, wheels, main spring. Hesaid that is what they use all the time. Opener is a screw drive, a special lubricant there, once a year.

To fix a garage door you get a pro to work on it.

There is a lot of pent up energy in those springs that if unleashed by accident can cause severe bodily harm.

WD 40 will provide a quick lube job but a good penetrating oil with silicone or lithium will last longer.

This is only just over a year old, but we haven't done any kind of oiling so I think this is just a yearly maintenance thing.

I figured we could just oil it while the door was closed, then open and close the door a few times. Am I wrong?

John -- is there a specific type of oil / lubricant you'd recommend, and if so, where do you get it? Walmart? Home Depot?
